Montgomery County Job Market Shows Strength in December, Outpacing State Average
Conroe and Montgomery County demonstrated a robust job market in December 2023, recording an unemployment rate of 3.8%. This figure stands favorably against the statewide Texas average, which sat at 4.0% for the same month.
The latest data from the Texas Workforce Commission indicates that out of a total labor force of 290,838 individuals in Montgomery County, only 11,042 were actively seeking employment during December.
While the county's unemployment rate saw a slight increase from 3.2% in December 2022 to 3.8% in December 2023, the total number of employed individuals grew substantially over the year, rising from 269,701 to 279,796. Scott Harper, CEO of the Conroe Chamber of Commerce, attributed this continued economic strength to Montgomery County's diverse industries, growing population, and expanding businesses.
Across Texas, the employment landscape also remained strong in December. The state added an impressive 51,900 non-farm jobs, bringing the total number of Texans employed to a record 14,064,200. Throughout the year, from December 2022 to December 2023, Texas saw a total of 404,300 new jobs, reflecting a solid 3.0% growth rate.
Texas's 4.0% unemployment rate remained consistent from November to December 2023, though it was slightly above the national average of 3.7% for December. The largest job gains statewide were observed in the Leisure and Hospitality sector, which added 15,900 jobs. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities followed with 13,700 new positions, and Private Education and Health Services grew by 7,600 jobs.
