Cartwright’s Western Wear: Conroe’s 70-Year Family Legacy

Conroe, TX – Cartwright’s Western Wear, a cornerstone of downtown Conroe, is gearing up to celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2025, marking seven decades as a cherished family-owned business in the community. Located at 102 N. Main St., the iconic store has been a constant presence since it first opened its doors in 1955.

The business was founded by Earl and Billie Cartwright, who laid the groundwork for what would become a local institution. Their vision was carried forward by their son, Ronnie Cartwright, and his wife, Pam, who subsequently took the reins. Today, Bryan Cartwright, son of Ronnie and Pam, continues the legacy as the third-generation owner, ensuring the store’s deep roots in Conroe remain strong.

When Earl and Billie Cartwright first opened shop, the business reflected the agrarian needs of the time. They focused significantly on selling feed, fertilizer, and farm equipment, alongside practical workwear for the area’s farmers and ranchers. Bryan Cartwright shared that in its earliest days, the store was “really more of a feed store with a little bit of clothing.”

A pivotal moment in the store’s history occurred in 1968 when it moved from its original, smaller building to its current, much larger spot at 102 N. Main St. This expansion into what was formerly the Conroe Feeders Supply building provided considerably more space, allowing for a broader inventory and setting the stage for its future evolution.

Over the past seven decades, Cartwright’s Western Wear has skillfully adapted to changing tastes and needs. While the store proudly continues to stock classic Western essentials, including premium boots from renowned brands like Frye and Lucchese, and a wide selection of traditional hats, it has also embraced modern trends. Customers can now find popular brands such as Ariat and Carhartt, catering to everyday fashion needs as well as durable workwear. The focus has notably shifted away from heavy farm equipment and feed, concentrating primarily on clothing and select tack.

Bryan Cartwright expressed his pride in upholding his grandparents’ founding vision, emphasizing that exceptional customer service and deep involvement in the Conroe community remain paramount values. The store has consistently supported local events, sponsoring everything from rodeos and various parades to youth activities. Its enduring presence and continued success for 70 years, all while remaining in the heart of downtown Conroe, stand as a testament to its commitment to the community.
