Rotary Boosts Diabetes Awareness, Awards Scholarships

The Woodlands, TX – High school seniors across Montgomery County recently demonstrated their insightful understanding of diabetes, its prevention, and management, as the Rotary Club of The Woodlands celebrated the successful conclusion of its 2023-2024 Diabetes Awareness Essay Contest. The annual initiative culminated in a special awards luncheon held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Landry’s Seafood House in The Woodlands, where a total of $7,750 in scholarships was proudly distributed to deserving students.

Vihita M. of The Woodlands College Park High School claimed the prestigious first-place award, earning a $2,500 scholarship for her exceptional essay. Michelle W. from The Woodlands High School secured second place and a $1,500 scholarship, while Shreya P. of Grand Oaks High School earned the third-place prize of $1,000. Beyond the top three, eleven other talented seniors were recognized with honorable mentions, each receiving a $250 scholarship for their thoughtful contributions.

The contest, a cornerstone of the Rotary Club’s community service efforts, challenged students to delve into critical topics surrounding diabetes, including prevention strategies, effective management techniques for those living with the condition, and the ongoing scientific pursuit for a cure. Its primary aim is to raise awareness and foster a deeper understanding of this widespread health issue among the next generation.

Addressing the gathering of students, educators, and community leaders, Dr. Jennifer O’Malley, a Pediatric Endocrinologist from Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands, provided invaluable insights into the unique challenges and growing prevalence of diabetes in younger populations. Her presentation underscored the critical need for early awareness and intervention within families and schools.

Rotary Club President Joe DeAnda emphasized the club’s unwavering commitment to empowering youth and addressing significant public health challenges. “This contest is more than just an academic exercise,” DeAnda stated during the luncheon. “It’s about igniting a passion in these bright young minds to tackle real-world problems. We are incredibly proud of the depth of research and thought demonstrated by all participants, and their contributions are vital in raising critical awareness.”

Contest Chair Bob Stepp echoed these sentiments, highlighting the collaborative effort involved. “The caliber of essays this year was outstanding, truly reflecting the dedication of our students and the steadfast support of their schools and families,” Stepp added. “Their work helps shine a light on diabetes, a disease that impacts millions globally and right here in our community, affecting individuals of all ages.”

The Rotary Club of The Woodlands, a local chapter of Rotary International, is dedicated to its motto of “Service Above Self,” focusing on various community and international initiatives including disease prevention and treatment, education, and economic development. The annual Diabetes Awareness Essay Contest aligns perfectly with these goals, aiming to shed light on a condition affecting over 37 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including a significant number in Texas and Montgomery County.

This particular initiative serves a dual purpose: not only does it provide a tangible financial boost to students’ college aspirations through scholarships, but it also fosters their engagement with a pressing public health concern, preparing them to be informed, empathetic, and proactive citizens.

The Rotary Club looks forward to continuing this vital program, further investing in the intellectual growth of Montgomery County’s youth and contributing to a healthier, more informed community.
