**Heritage Museum Unveils Exhibit Exploring Nation’s Capital History**

**Conroe, TX** – The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County is set to launch a captivating new exhibit, “Designing the Nation’s Capital: The History of Washington D.C.,” offering local residents a deep dive into the foundational story of America’s seat of government. The exhibit officially opens Monday, October 2nd, and will run through January 27th, 2024.

Curated by Dr. Ken R. Johnson from the esteemed Maryland Center for History and Culture, the exhibition meticulously traces the genesis, development, and future outlook of Washington, D.C. Visitors will explore the pivotal decision by President George Washington to select the Potomac River site, the visionary urban planning of French engineer Pierre L’Enfant, and the crucial role played by Benjamin Banneker, a free Black astronomer, who helped survey and recreate L’Enfant’s intricate plans after they were lost. The narrative also highlights President John Adams, the first resident of the White House in 1800, and the initial construction phases of the iconic Capitol Building from 1793 to 1800.

“This exhibit is a fantastic opportunity for our community to connect with a cornerstone of American history,” said Museum Director Suzie Johnson. “While our focus is often on local Montgomery County history, understanding the origins of our nation’s capital provides invaluable context to our shared heritage. Dr. Johnson has done an exceptional job bringing these historical figures and their monumental achievements to life.”

Dr. Johnson will be on hand to personally introduce the exhibit and share insights during a special opening reception on Monday, October 2nd, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. His presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m., followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to explore the displays.

“The story of Washington D.C.’s creation is one of incredible foresight, collaboration, and overcoming significant challenges,” Dr. Johnson shared. “From the grand vision of L’Enfant to Banneker’s remarkable skill in astronomical calculations, these early patriots laid the groundwork for the modern capital we know today. I’m excited to share these narratives with the Montgomery County community.”

Admission to both the opening reception and the exhibit itself is free of charge, making it an accessible educational experience for families, students, and history enthusiasts alike.

The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County is located at 1506 I-45 North in Conroe, nestled within Candy Cane Park. Regular museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
