$15M Suit Alleges Cooper School Toxic Culture

**Lawsuit Alleges Toxic Culture, Negligence at The John Cooper School, Seeks $15 Million**

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The John Cooper School, a prominent independent K-12 institution in The Woodlands, is facing a $15 million lawsuit filed by a former student who alleges the school fostered a “toxic culture” for years, failing to protect students from abuse and mishandling numerous complaints. The suit, filed on April 24, 2024, in Montgomery County’s 418th District Court (Case No. 24-04-06041-CV), contends that between 2017 and 2021, the school was aware of and failed to address a wide range of misconduct.

The plaintiff, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, claims that incidents included hazing, significant alcohol and drug use among students, sexual harassment, body shaming, and at least one specific locker room incident reportedly involving urination. The lawsuit paints a picture of an environment where students allegedly engaged in inappropriate and harmful behaviors without adequate intervention from school leadership.

Among those specifically named in the lawsuit are Dr. Christopher Crosby, the current Head of School, and Stephen Popp, who previously served as Director of Student Life, a teacher, and a coach at the school. The filing asserts that both individuals allegedly knew about the pervasive misconduct and failed to respond appropriately or take necessary corrective actions.

A particularly grave claim in the lawsuit states that school administrators allegedly failed to report suspected sex crimes to the appropriate authorities, specifically the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or Child Protective Services. Under Texas Family Code, certain professionals, including school officials, are legally mandated to report any reasonable suspicion of child abuse or neglect. The lawsuit implies that this legal obligation was not met.

Attorney Sean O’Rourke, representing the plaintiff, emphasized the severity of the allegations, telling media outlets that the lawsuit aims to hold the institution accountable for what he describes as a systemic failure to protect its students.

In response to the allegations, The John Cooper School issued a statement asserting that the claims are false. The school affirmed its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its students and stated it would “defend itself vigorously” against the claims in court. The statement further highlighted the school’s dedication to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment, emphasizing its core values.

The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for negligence, gross negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and breach of fiduciary duty. The legal proceedings are expected to continue in Montgomery County, with further court dates to be set. The outcome of the lawsuit could have significant implications for The John Cooper School and its reputation within the community.
