Conroe Players Stage Show for Actors with Disabilities

CONROE, Texas – The Players Theatre Company in Conroe is embarking on a pioneering journey to foster inclusive arts, announcing “Players Beyond Barriers,” a new theatrical program specifically designed for actors with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) or those on the autism spectrum. This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide a dedicated stage and supportive environment for individuals often underrepresented in mainstream performing arts.

The program is set to launch its inaugural full production in summer 2026, promising a vibrant opportunity for aspiring actors in the Conroe community and beyond. Larry Dean, the company’s executive director, and Lisa Dean, the development director who is spearheading this program, expressed immense enthusiasm for its potential impact.

“Our vision for Players Beyond Barriers is simple yet profound: to create a truly inclusive and accessible theatrical experience where everyone has the chance to shine,” stated Lisa Dean. “We believe in the transformative power of theater, and we want to ensure that individuals with disabilities have the same opportunities to explore their creativity, develop new skills, and experience the joy of performing.”

Larry Dean added, “This program isn’t just about putting on a show; it’s about building confidence, fostering social connections, and enriching lives through the performing arts. We’re providing a dedicated space where these actors can develop their skills, express themselves, and be celebrated for their unique talents.”

The first production under the “Players Beyond Barriers” banner will be a beloved classic: “The Wizard of Oz.” Auditions for this inaugural show are scheduled for spring 2026, inviting individuals with IDD or on the autism spectrum to try out for roles. Following auditions, the selected cast will engage in a comprehensive rehearsal period, meeting two to three times per week over 10 to 12 weeks. This intensive preparation will culminate in a series of four to five performances that summer, bringing the magical land of Oz to life for local audiences.

All performances will be held at the historic Owen Theatre, located at 225 Metcalf St. in downtown Conroe, Texas – a venue well-known for its role in the city’s vibrant arts scene.

Funding for “Players Beyond Barriers” is a critical component of its success and sustainability. The program has already secured a significant initial boost with a $5,000 grant from the Conroe Service League. This generous contribution will help cover essential startup costs, including set design, costumes, props, and specialized support needed to create an optimal environment for the actors.

While there is a proposed $150 participation fee per actor, The Players Theatre Company is committed to removing financial obstacles. They emphasize that fees can be waived or reduced if needed, ensuring that economic barriers do not prevent any interested individual from participating.

The company is actively seeking additional community support and grants to sustain and grow the “Players Beyond Barriers” program. This includes inviting individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and volunteer assistance to help with everything from backstage support to program administration.

This initiative represents a significant step for The Players Theatre Company, a long-standing pillar of the Conroe arts community, in broadening its reach and impact. By championing inclusive theater, the company aims to not only provide unique opportunities for actors with disabilities but also to enrich the cultural landscape of Conroe, fostering a more understanding and compassionate community.

Individuals interested in auditioning, volunteering, or learning more about how to support “Players Beyond Barriers” are encouraged to visit The Players Theatre Company’s website at www.OwenTheatre.com or contact Lisa Dean at 936-539-4400.
