Crighton Theatre completes 450-seat renovation

**Crighton Theatre Kicks Off 2026 Season with Grand Reveal of Renovated Auditorium**

**Conroe, TX –** The historic Crighton Theatre in Downtown Conroe is set to welcome patrons to its 2026 season with a significant upgrade, as the Crighton Theatre Foundation proudly announced the completion of a comprehensive renovation project in its main auditorium. The beloved nearly 90-year-old venue now boasts brand-new seating, replacing the original chairs that have served audiences since the theatre first opened its doors in 1935.

Installation of the 450 new seats, located at 234 N. Main St., began in June 2025 and concluded late last year, just in time for the highly anticipated 2026 season launch. The initiative aimed to meticulously maintain the theatre’s cherished historic charm while providing an enhanced level of comfort and a modernized feel for contemporary audiences.

“This project represents a monumental step in preserving the legacy of the Crighton Theatre while ensuring it remains a vibrant, comfortable, and accessible hub for arts and culture in Conroe for generations to come,” said Marybeth Johnson, President of the Crighton Theatre Foundation. “Our patrons deserve the best possible experience, and these new seats deliver on that promise without sacrificing the architectural grandeur that makes the Crighton so special.”

The new seating features plush, ergonomically designed chairs with improved cushioning and enhanced legroom, all meticulously chosen to complement the theatre’s existing ornate interior. While details on the specific fabric and color were not immediately available, sources close to the project indicate a classic aesthetic was paramount.

Funding for this extensive project was made possible through a highly successful fundraising campaign, aptly named “Take Your Seat in History,” which aimed to raise $150,000. Supporters had the unique opportunity to name individual seats, leaving an indelible mark on the theatre’s ongoing story. The campaign garnered significant community support, reflecting Conroe’s deep appreciation for its cultural landmark.

“The outpouring of support from our community for the ‘Take Your Seat in History’ campaign was truly heartwarming,” added Johnson. “It underscores how much the Crighton means to Conroe. Every named seat tells a story of dedication to the arts and a commitment to keeping our downtown vibrant.”

The Crighton Theatre, a cornerstone of Conroe’s downtown revitalization efforts, opened on November 25, 1935, as a state-of-the-art movie palace. Named after Harry Crighton, the general manager of the Conroe Lumber Company who organized the fundraising drive to build the venue, it quickly became a cultural icon. After decades of operation, the theatre fell into disrepair until it was acquired by the City of Conroe in 1978 and leased to the Crighton Theatre Foundation in 1979, which meticulously restored and reopened it as a live performance venue in 1980.

David Chen, the theatre’s Artistic Director, expressed excitement about the impact on performances. “These new seats aren’t just about comfort; they enhance the entire theatre-going experience. Improved sightlines and a more welcoming environment will undoubtedly enrich our audiences’ connection to the fantastic productions we have lined up for our 2026 season. We can’t wait to share our stage with a reinvigorated house.”

Details regarding the full 2026 season lineup and opening show dates will be announced by the Crighton Theatre Foundation in the coming weeks. Patrons and prospective donors are encouraged to visit the theatre’s official website for updates and information on how to support the ongoing preservation and programming efforts.
