Montgomery Co. adds 100 mental health beds

**Conroe Mental Health Facility Undergoing Major Expansion to Address Soaring Demand**

**CONROE, TX –** Montgomery County’s primary mental health inpatient facility, operated by WellBrings in Conroe, is nearing the completion of a significant expansion project that will add 100 new psychiatric beds, boosting its total capacity to 340. The Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD), which oversees the project, anticipates the expansion will be fully operational in early 2026.

Located strategically just north of FM 3083 and west of Interstate 45, the facility’s growth is a direct response to what officials describe as overwhelming demand for mental healthcare services across the region. The $42.5 million undertaking is being funded entirely through MCHD bond funds, underscoring the district’s commitment to addressing a critical community need.

The urgency for increased capacity is evident in recent data. The facility has consistently operated at 95% occupancy or higher, indicating a persistent shortage of available beds. In 2025 alone, the facility received over 2,000 referrals from emergency rooms, highlighting the strain on existing resources and the critical need for timely access to specialized mental health care.

“This expansion represents a vital step forward in our mission to serve the health needs of Montgomery County residents,” said a representative from the Montgomery County Hospital District. “The demand for mental health services continues to grow exponentially, and this significant investment ensures that more individuals will have access to the inpatient care they desperately need, reducing wait times and alleviating pressure on our local emergency departments.”

The project builds upon a previous expansion completed in 2023, which saw the facility’s capacity increase from 120 to 240 beds. This latest addition, taking the total to 340, marks a substantial long-term investment in mental health infrastructure for the rapidly growing Montgomery County.

WellBrings, a known provider of mental health services, operates the facility, offering comprehensive inpatient care designed to stabilize patients during acute mental health crises. The additional beds are expected to not only serve Montgomery County residents but also individuals from surrounding areas who often rely on the Conroe facility due to limited regional options.

The completion in early 2026 is expected to significantly improve the continuum of care for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, providing a much-needed increase in accessibility to crucial inpatient treatment.
