Conroe Premieres New Dracula Rock Opera

**New Dracula Rock Opera, ‘Beautiful Watch,’ Set for World Premiere in Conroe This October**

Conroe, TX – A captivating and entirely new musical adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic “Dracula,” titled “Beautiful Watch: Beginning and End,” is poised to make its world premiere at The Owen Theatre this October. Produced by Stage Right of Texas, this original rock opera promises a fresh, contemporary take on the timeless Gothic tale, delving deep into its psychological underpinnings.

The ambitious production begins its run with a preview performance on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. The official opening night follows on Friday, October 27, also at 7:30 p.m. Additional shows are scheduled for Saturday, October 28, with both a 2 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. evening performance. The world premiere engagement concludes with a final matinee on Sunday, October 29, at 2 p.m. All performances will be held at The Owen Theatre, located at 225 Metcalf St. in vibrant downtown Conroe.

“Beautiful Watch: Beginning and End” is the brainchild of local playwright and director Josh Clark, who penned the book and lyrics for the show. Clark collaborated on the music with Cody Joe Smith, who also serves as music director for the production. Clark, known for his contributions to the local arts scene, is also directing the show, making this a truly homegrown theatrical event.

The cast features Smith in the titular role of Dracula, bringing his musical expertise to the iconic character. Victoria Riley takes on the pivotal role of Mina Murray, while Clark himself steps onto the stage as the formidable Van Helsing. The talented ensemble also includes Michael McMillan as Jonathan Harker, Leigh Wyatt as Lucy Westenra, Sam Brown as Dr. Seward, Aaron Brown as Arthur Holmwood, and Matthew Spradlin as Quincey Morris.

What sets this adaptation apart is its modern rock opera feel and its innovative exploration of the original novel’s themes. Clark describes it as “a love letter to the original novel,” aiming to re-examine the complex “love story” between Dracula and Mina through a contemporary lens. He seeks to explore Dracula’s motivations and the idea of “true love” in a new light. Smith emphasizes the “rock opera” element, promising an energetic and fresh take that still deeply honors the story’s Gothic roots and provides a vivid, immersive theatrical experience with haunting melodies and powerful performances.

For Stage Right of Texas, a cornerstone of Conroe’s performing arts community, hosting a world premiere is a significant milestone. It underscores the organization’s commitment to fostering new works and delivering high-quality, diverse cultural experiences to residents of Montgomery County and beyond.
