13th History Road Rally Funds Heritage Museum, Chamber Wins

**Chamber Team Drives to Victory at 13th Annual History Road Rally, Funds Vital Museum Mission**

**CONROE, TX – May 6, 2024** – The spirit of Montgomery County’s rich past was celebrated in full force this past Saturday, May 4th, as the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County (HMMC) successfully wrapped up its 13th Annual History Road Rally. The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce team, aptly named “Team Chamber,” skillfully navigated clues and historical sites to claim the coveted top prize, while 16 other teams explored the county’s vibrant heritage in a competitive and educational scavenger hunt.

Starting and finishing at the Heritage Museum, nestled within Conroe’s scenic Candy Cane Park, the rally challenged 17 teams to delve into the heart of Montgomery County’s narrative. This year’s focus prominently featured Texas independence and the lives of early pioneers, many of whom had direct connections to pivotal moments like the Battle of San Jacinto, making the drive not just a race, but a journey through foundational Texas history.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to win, but the real reward is spending a day actively engaging with our county’s incredible history and knowing we’re supporting such a vital local institution,” shared Scott Brown, a member of the victorious “Team Chamber.” The winning squad also included Jessica Brown, Michael Stoecker, and Jessica Stoecker, who demonstrated an impressive blend of historical knowledge and navigational prowess.

The challenging route led participants to various historical markers, lesser-known landmarks, and significant sites, where they answered questions that tested their understanding of local events and figures. Each clue, often a riddle or a historical excerpt, offered a unique opportunity to uncover the stories that shaped Montgomery County.

Taking the second-place honors was “Team Conroe Crossroads,” comprising Mark and Robin Johnson with Lisa and Roger Squier. The third-place spot went to “Team L.D. “Buddy” Johnson Historical Marker Crew,” a family team that underscored the personal connection many residents have to the county’s past. Carolyn and Richard Johnson, along with Phyllis and Wayne Johnson, are all direct descendants of the pioneer L.D. “Buddy” Johnson, adding a poignant layer to their historical pursuit.

Beyond the thrill of the chase, the History Road Rally stands as a critical annual fundraiser for the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County. The museum’s unwavering mission is to collect, preserve, and share the county’s diverse and vibrant heritage through its extensive archives, exhibits, and educational programs. The significant funds raised from this event are essential for supporting HMMC’s ongoing preservation efforts, maintaining its historic collections, and funding crucial educational outreach initiatives that connect both children and adults with their local history.

“The History Road Rally is truly one of our signature events,” said Sally Copley, Executive Director of the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County. “It allows the community to engage with history in such a fun, interactive way, and the funds raised are absolutely vital for us to continue our work. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the teams, sponsors, and volunteers who made this year’s rally such a resounding success.”

After a day of historical sleuthing across the county’s roads, participants gathered back at the museum for a celebratory dinner, an awards ceremony filled with camaraderie, and a lively silent auction. The evening’s festivities were perfectly complemented by live music from the popular local band, The Road Kings, providing a fitting end to a day steeped in history and community spirit.

The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County invites the community to visit its exhibits, learn more about local history, and support its mission. For more information on upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, or how to donate, please visit www.heritagemuseum.us or call (936) 539-6873.
