**Conroe Firefighters Cast Ballots in Pivotal Collective Bargaining Vote**

**CONROE, TX** – Conroe’s firefighters are currently engaged in a significant internal vote that could dramatically alter how their employment terms, including salaries, benefits, and working conditions, are determined. Members of the Conroe Firefighters Association (CFA) have been casting ballots since July 15th on whether to adopt collective bargaining, a process that would empower their union to negotiate directly with the City of Conroe.

The vote, which concludes on July 29th, is poised to usher in a new era of labor relations for the department, with results anticipated to be announced on August 1st.

At its core, the initiative seeks to grant the CFA the formal right to act as the exclusive bargaining agent for all Conroe firefighters. This would replace the current system, where the City of Conroe largely sets terms of employment unilaterally, without a direct, binding negotiation process involving the firefighters’ union.

The push for collective bargaining stems from persistent concerns voiced by firefighters regarding competitive salaries, adequate staffing levels, recruitment and retention challenges, and overall working conditions within the department. Proponents argue that Conroe firefighters often find themselves at a disadvantage compared to counterparts in neighboring cities and across the state, impacting morale and the department’s ability to attract and keep top talent.

“This isn’t just about paychecks; it’s about ensuring Conroe has the best possible fire department, adequately staffed and equipped to serve our growing community,” said Mark Harrison, President of the Conroe Firefighters Association. “We believe collective bargaining will create a more stable, competitive environment for our firefighters and ultimately benefit every resident by enhancing the quality of our emergency services.”

The CFA demonstrated broad internal support for the measure, successfully gathering signatures from over 90% of its membership to place the issue on the ballot, a strong indicator of the desire for change within the ranks.

If the measure passes, the CFA would gain the authority to sit at the negotiation table with city officials to hammer out a comprehensive collective bargaining agreement. The Association hopes that negotiations could commence within 30 days of the results’ certification – potentially by the end of August 2024 – with an ambitious goal of having an agreement in place before the end of the year.

Conversely, should the measure fail, Conroe firefighters would continue under the existing system, where the City of Conroe retains sole authority to set their terms of employment.

The City of Conroe, a rapidly growing community, relies heavily on its fire department for emergency response, public safety, and specialized services. Maintaining a high-quality, professional fire department is crucial for the city’s infrastructure and its residents’ well-being.

A spokesperson from the City Manager’s Office stated, “The City of Conroe values its dedicated firefighters and is committed to fair compensation and excellent working conditions. We respect the democratic process underway within the Firefighters Association and will review the outcome carefully, prepared to engage as appropriate under state law and our commitment to fiscal responsibility.”

It is important to note that this current collective bargaining vote is distinct from Proposition A, which Conroe voters rejected in May. That previous measure dealt with a different method of calculating firefighter pay rather than establishing the fundamental right to collective bargaining. This vote focuses specifically on granting the CFA the power to negotiate wages, hours, and working conditions on behalf of its members.

The results, expected on August 1st, will mark a significant moment for the Conroe Fire Department and could redefine the relationship between its firefighters and the city they serve. Local residents and city officials will be closely watching for the outcome of this historic vote.
