Conroe Worker Rescued from High Scaffold

CONROE, Texas – A construction worker trapped high above the ground on a malfunctioning scaffold was safely rescued by Conroe firefighters Monday afternoon, May 13th, in a high-stakes technical operation. The incident occurred at a new medical office building under construction at 100 Medical Center Drive, adjacent to HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe.

Emergency crews, including the Conroe Fire Department, Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD), and the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, were dispatched to the site around 1 p.m. after reports of a worker stranded on a powered scaffold. The scaffold had become stuck on the building’s fifth floor, leaving the individual approximately 25 feet off the ground and unable to descend safely.

Conroe firefighters swiftly mobilized their specialized technical rescue team. Using a ladder truck, crews were able to reach the worker’s position, secure him in place, and assess the situation. The primary rescue involved deploying a sophisticated rope rescue system to carefully and systematically lower the worker to solid ground.

“This was a high-angle rope rescue, which requires significant training, coordination, and specialized equipment,” said Conroe Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Wilson. “Our crews performed flawlessly, ensuring the worker’s safety was the top priority throughout the complex operation. Every scenario is unique, but our regular training for these types of incidents ensures we’re prepared for the unexpected.”

The rescue operation concluded successfully with the worker brought down uninjured. Medics from the Montgomery County Hospital District were on scene to provide immediate evaluation. “Our medics were on standby throughout the operation and evaluated the worker immediately upon his safe return to the ground,” stated Justin Smith, an MCHD spokesperson. “Thankfully, he appeared uninjured and chose not to be transported to a local hospital.”

The construction site is for a new medical office building, part of the ongoing development in the area. While the exact cause of the scaffold malfunction was not immediately clear, the incident is expected to prompt a review by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which investigates workplace accidents to ensure compliance with safety standards and prevent future occurrences.

The swift and coordinated response by local emergency services ensured a positive outcome for the stranded worker, highlighting the critical role of specialized rescue training in the community.
