Texas Flag Designer Charles Stewart Presentation

CONROE, TX – The Montgomery County Central Library is set to host a unique historical presentation, offering residents an immersive look into the life of Charles B. Stewart, the pivotal figure largely credited with designing the iconic Texas Lone Star Flag. The free public event will take place on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 7 p.m.

Located at 104 I-45 North in Conroe, the library will welcome Plano-based actor Jack Shepherd, known for his compelling historical portrayals of Texas luminaries such as Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston. Shepherd will bring Stewart’s remarkable story to life, offering attendees a captivating journey into the origins of one of the state’s most cherished symbols.

Organized by the Montgomery County Historical Commission, the event comes just two days ahead of Texas Flag Day on January 25, which commemorates the flag’s adoption by the Republic of Texas Congress on January 25, 1839 – 185 years ago this week.

Charles B. Stewart, born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1815, arrived in Texas during the tumultuous 1830s and swiftly became a central figure in the fight for independence and the formation of the Republic. His extensive contributions include being a signatory of the Texas Declaration of Independence, serving as a delegate to key conventions in 1835 and 1836, and holding the distinguished position of the first Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas. After statehood, he continued to serve his community as a state legislator and district judge. Stewart’s deep ties to the area are evident in his long residency; he called Montgomery County home from 1845 until his passing in 1885, and his final resting place is the Montgomery Community Cemetery.

While historical accounts may note various individuals involved in the flag’s creation, Stewart is widely recognized for his instrumental role in drafting the bill that established its specifications and for his central contribution to its conceptual design and ultimate adoption. The Lone Star Flag, with its single white star, blue vertical stripe, and horizontal white and red stripes, has stood as a powerful emblem of Texan independence and pride for generations.

The Montgomery County Historical Commission, dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of the region, continually seeks engaging ways to connect the public with the stories of Texas pioneers. This presentation is part of their ongoing efforts to highlight the individuals who shaped the state.

Attendees will have the opportunity to delve into the life of a true Texas patriot and learn about the profound legacy he left behind. Refreshments will be served, offering a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for this unique educational experience.

This special event is free and open to the public, providing a valuable opportunity for history enthusiasts of all ages. For more information, please contact the Montgomery County Central Library at (936) 788-8314 or visit their website at www.montgomerycountylibrary.com.
