Conroe Duck Race Finds Surprise Winner, Aids Charity

**”Hopper” Paddles to Unexpected Victory in Conroe’s 2nd Annual Duck Race, Raising Thousands for Local Charities**

Conroe, TX – In a thrilling, splash-filled spectacle on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, a rubber duck named “Hopper,” owned by long-time Conroe residents Ron and Sandy Saikowski, unexpectedly clinched the top prize at the 2nd Annual Conroe Duck Race on Saturday, March 23, 2024. The popular community event, organized by the Conroe Noon Lions Club, drew hundreds of eager spectators to the banks behind Conroe’s Heritage Place Park for a day of family fun and vital fundraising.

The Saikowskis, active members of the Lions Club themselves, were initially unaware of their duck’s triumphant finish. “Hopper” had a dramatic arrival, initially missed amidst the excitement of the race’s conclusion, only to be discovered later, wedged decisively against the finish line, confirming its first-place status. The joyous news reached the couple on Monday morning, solidifying their victory and the accompanying $2,000 cash prize.

“We were absolutely shocked and thrilled,” Sandy Saikowski recounted, still beaming from the unexpected win. “We’ve adopted ducks every year to support the club, but we never imagined Hopper would actually win! It’s such a fun event, and to win feels like icing on the cake.” Ron Saikowski added, “We’re just so happy for the Lions Club and the incredible work they do for our community. The prize money will certainly be a nice bonus, maybe for some home improvements or a special trip.”

This year’s race saw approximately 3,500 rubber ducks “adopted” by community members at $5 each, contributing an impressive $17,500 towards the Conroe Noon Lions Club’s extensive portfolio of community charities. These crucial funds directly support local projects focused on critical needs, including providing eyesight and hearing assistance, raising diabetes awareness, fostering youth outreach programs, and offering disaster relief services.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed by the community’s support for our second annual Duck Race,” stated Karen Lonon, Co-Chair of the Conroe Duck Race and President of the Conroe Noon Lions Club. “To see so many families come out, adopt ducks, and enjoy the festivities is truly heartwarming. Every duck adopted translates directly into vital services for our neighbors in Conroe and Montgomery County. The funds raised this year will make a tangible difference in countless lives, from providing glasses for a child to supporting local food banks.”

The atmosphere on race day was electric. Beginning with the ceremonial release of thousands of bright yellow ducks into the gentle current of the West Fork of the San Jacinto, the race was the centerpiece of a larger community festival. Beyond the main event, families enjoyed a vibrant array of activities, including delicious offerings from local food trucks, creative face painting, a lively bounce house for children, and a diverse selection of local vendors showcasing their goods. The festive gathering underscored the Conroe Noon Lions Club’s commitment not only to service but also to fostering community spirit.

The Conroe Noon Lions Club, part of Lions Clubs International, is a global service organization with a motto of “We Serve.” Locally, the club is renowned for its dedication to improving the lives of Conroe area residents through various initiatives throughout the year, with the Duck Race quickly becoming one of its most anticipated and successful fundraisers.

“The success of the 2nd Annual Duck Race truly highlights the generosity and spirit of Conroe,” said Steve Lonon, Co-Chair of the Conroe Duck Race. “We’re already looking forward to next year, aiming to make the 3rd Annual Conroe Duck Race even bigger and better, further expanding our capacity to serve.”
