Conroe St. Patrick’s Day Honors Bill Waggoner

Conroe, TX – Conroe is preparing for a vibrant display of green and a heartfelt tribute this Saturday, March 16th, as the city hosts its annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at Heritage Place Park. The free, family-friendly event, presented by Conroe Parks and Recreation, promises a full day of Irish-themed festivities from 10 AM to 5 PM at 500 Metcalf Street in Downtown Conroe.

This year’s celebration carries particular significance as it will honor the legacy of Bill Waggoner, a beloved and longtime community supporter who passed away last November at the age of 93. A Korean War veteran, Waggoner was a driving force behind many of Conroe’s advancements, particularly the revitalization of its historic downtown. His tireless dedication touched numerous organizations, including the Conroe Friendly City Committee, where he championed beautification efforts, the Conroe Convention and Visitors Bureau, promoting local tourism, the Conroe Art League, and the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, fostering cultural enrichment.

“Bill Waggoner was more than just a volunteer; he was an architect of modern Conroe,” said a representative from Conroe Parks and Recreation, reflecting on his impact. “His vision and unwavering ‘can-do’ attitude helped transform our city, and it’s fitting that we honor him at an event that brings so much joy and community spirit to the downtown he loved so much.”

A special recognition ceremony for Waggoner is scheduled for 11:30 AM on the Heritage Place main stage. His family will be present to accept the community’s gratitude and share in the remembrance of a man whose dedication left an indelible mark on Conroe. Many who knew him recall his optimistic spirit and his ability to inspire others to work towards common goals, often citing his efforts in preserving and enhancing historical landmarks throughout the city center.

Beyond the special tribute, attendees can immerse themselves in a lively atmosphere of traditional Irish culture. The entertainment lineup includes traditional Irish music from the popular Lone Star Piper, offering rousing bagpipe performances throughout the day. Additional live music acts featuring Celtic folk tunes and potentially local Irish dance troupes are also anticipated, ensuring a continuous flow of festive sounds and sights.

The park will transform into a bustling marketplace with a variety of vendors offering unique crafts, Irish-themed merchandise, and local artisan goods. A tempting array of food trucks will be on hand, serving up everything from classic Irish fare to diverse culinary delights, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every palate.

Families with younger children will appreciate the dedicated kids’ zone, which will feature activities designed to entertain, such as face painting, bounce houses, and interactive games, allowing parents to enjoy the festivities while their little ones create their own St. Patrick’s Day memories.

For those looking to kick off their day with some healthy activity, the annual Shamrock Fun Run offers both 5K and 10K options. Registration for the run begins at 7:30 AM, with the race starting promptly at 8:30 AM. Both races begin and end at Heritage Place Park, taking participants through scenic routes around downtown Conroe. Interested runners can register online in advance or on race day. Further details and registration links are available on the Conroe Parks and Recreation website.
