Conroe Christmas Parade: City ends support, future unclear

**86-Year Conroe Christmas Parade Tradition in Jeopardy as City Withdraws Support**

**CONROE, TX –** The festive future of the Conroe Christmas Parade, a cherished tradition dating back to 1937, hangs in the balance after the City of Conroe officially severed its financial and in-kind support. The decision, communicated in July 2023, has left organizers scrambling to secure funding for the beloved community event beyond the current year.

Conroe Stars & Stripes, the non-profit organization solely responsible for orchestrating the annual spectacle, was informed by City Administrator Paul Virgadamo and Assistant City Administrator Steve Williams that the city would be pulling its approximately $25,000 in cash contributions. Additionally, critical in-kind services, estimated at $10,000 to $15,000, would also cease. These services are vital for the parade’s execution and safety, encompassing police presence for security and traffic control along the downtown Conroe Main Street route, public works assistance for street closures and setup, and the provision of necessary barricades. In total, the city’s withdrawal represents an estimated annual loss of $35,000 to $40,000.

Larry Adamek, president of Conroe Stars & Stripes, expressed deep concern over the city’s decision. According to Adamek, the city cited “liability concerns and financial implications” as reasons for the withdrawal but did not provide specific details to the organization. Attempts to reach city officials for further clarification on these specific concerns were not immediately returned.

The late notification for the December 9, 2023 parade created an immediate crisis for Conroe Stars & Stripes. Adamek confirmed that the organization had to rapidly mobilize and privately fund the essential safety and logistical costs that the city had previously covered. This last-minute effort ensured the 2023 event, a pillar of Conroe’s holiday season, could proceed, albeit under immense financial strain.

Looking ahead, the prospect for the 2024 Conroe Christmas Parade and beyond appears daunting without a new funding model. Adamek estimates that his organization will now need to raise a staggering $50,000 to $60,000 annually just to cover the basic safety and logistical necessities previously provided by the city. This figure does not include other operational costs associated with planning and executing a parade of this scale.

Despite the significant setback, Conroe Stars & Stripes remains committed to preserving the long-standing tradition. Adamek is actively exploring avenues for a new “public-private partnership” to secure the parade’s future. He specifically mentioned ongoing preliminary discussions with Montgomery County, noting that Commissioner James Noack’s office has been approached as a potential partner.

“The Conroe Christmas Parade is more than just an event; it’s a vital part of our community’s heritage, bringing joy to thousands of families and visitors each year, and drawing people to our downtown businesses,” Adamek stated. “We are hopeful that with the support of new partners, we can continue this cherished tradition for generations to come.”

The Conroe Christmas Parade, which features dozens of floats, marching bands, and community groups, traditionally draws large crowds to downtown Conroe, injecting economic activity into local businesses during the holiday season. The potential loss of such a deeply embedded community event has sparked concern among residents and local business owners alike.
