**After Unprecedented Rebuild, Four Conroe Families Finally Receive Keys to Habitat Homes**

**CONROE, TX – June 12, 2024** – Tears of joy, relief, and a profound sense of accomplishment flowed freely today as four Conroe families – the Ortiz, Juarez, Rodriguez, and Martinez families – officially received the keys to their new homes in Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County’s Cedar Creek community. The long-awaited key distribution ceremony marked a monumental milestone, concluding a challenging two-year journey marred by significant delays and a complete rebuilding effort that tested the perseverance of families and the organization alike.

The path to homeownership for these families was anything but conventional. Groundbreaking for the homes initially occurred in 2022, with an optimistic completion target set for early 2023. However, those plans dramatically shifted when widespread construction issues emerged, including severe mold contamination and structural integrity problems.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision, but one we had to make for the safety and long-term well-being of our future homeowners,” explained Nicole Novack, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County. “After extensive assessments, we determined the only responsible course of action was to essentially start over. This meant tearing down significant portions of the initial construction and rebuilding these homes from scratch to ensure they met our rigorous quality and safety standards.”

This unforeseen setback led to multiple, frustrating delays for the families who had already invested deeply in the process. Each family contributed 1,200 hours of “sweat equity” – working on their own homes and the homes of neighbors – in addition to attending comprehensive “Home Ownership University” classes, which prepare them for the responsibilities of maintaining a home and managing finances.

For families like the Ortiz family, the prolonged wait meant continued reliance on living with relatives, adding immense pressure and uncertainty to their daily lives. “Every month that passed, it felt like our dream was getting further away,” shared a representative from one of the families, visibly emotional during the ceremony. “To finally hold these keys, knowing all we’ve been through, it’s truly overwhelming. It’s more than a house; it’s stability, it’s a future.”

The perseverance of these families, coupled with overwhelming community support, proved pivotal in overcoming these unprecedented obstacles. The original construction issues necessitated securing additional funding and labor far beyond initial projections.

Critical partners stepped up to the plate, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to affordable housing. The Woodlands Methodist Church, a long-standing partner of Habitat MCTX, provided significant support. The Houston Astros Foundation contributed crucial resources, and Cadence Bank played a pivotal role in securing the necessary additional funding. Along with these major partners, countless individual volunteers dedicated thousands of hours of their time and effort to bring these homes to completion.
