Conroe Forms Commission for America 250th

**Conroe Gears Up for Nation’s 250th Anniversary with Dedicated Local Commission**

CONROE, TX – Conroe is charting a course to actively participate in a monumental national celebration, establishing a dedicated commission to orchestrate local events for the United States’ Semiquincentennial in 2026. This initiative, nationally recognized as “America 250,” marks the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, aiming to unite Americans in commemorating the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring the future.

The Conroe City Council unanimously approved the formation of the Conroe America250 Commission on February 8th. This nine-member body is tasked with infusing a unique “Conroe spirit” into the nationwide celebrations, striving for a distinct “hometown feel” in all planned activities. The commission is chaired by John Husbands, with City Council liaison Harry Hardman providing direct municipal oversight. Other distinguished members include Jody Czajkoski, Dr. Jeffry S. Barham, Dr. Fred F. Welch, Dr. Bob Ford, Pat Spackey, Amy Vance, and Monica O’Kane.

“This is an incredible opportunity for Conroe to reflect on our nation’s rich history while showcasing the vibrant community we are today,” stated John Husbands, Chairman of the Conroe America250 Commission. “Our goal is to create memorable experiences that resonate with everyone, from our youngest citizens learning about our past to our long-time residents celebrating our shared future. We want Conroe’s celebrations to truly embody the spirit of independence and unity.”

With just over two years until the nationwide celebration officially kicks off on July 4, 2026, the commission is already focusing on educational initiatives, robust youth involvement, and a deep dive into local and national history. Plans include extensive collaboration with key community organizations such as the Conroe Independent School District, the Montgomery County Historical Society, the Montgomery County Heritage Museum, and various local arts and music groups, ensuring a multifaceted and inclusive approach to the commemorations.

Councilman Harry Hardman, serving as the liaison to the commission, underscored the city’s proactive stance. “Conroe has always prided itself on community engagement and celebrating our heritage. By forming this commission early, we’re ensuring that our city plays a vital and meaningful role in this once-in-a-generation event. It’s an honor to represent the Council in an effort that will undoubtedly bring our community closer.”

While specific events are still in the conceptual and planning stages, discussions have centered on utilizing prominent city locations like Heritage Park and Candy Cane Park for various activities. A significant focal point for the commission is a potential large-scale downtown celebration on July 4, 2026, intended to specifically honor the signing of the Declaration of Independence and its enduring legacy.

This local effort aligns with a national directive stemming from the “United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act of 2016” (Public Law 114-196), which established a federal commission to coordinate this historic observance across the country. The national “America250” initiative encourages communities like Conroe to develop localized programs that reflect their unique contributions to the American story. Conroe’s proactive approach ensures the city will play a vibrant role in this historic observance. Residents eager to follow the commission’s progress and learn about upcoming events can already engage with the dedicated “Conroe America250” Facebook page, which is active and sharing updates. The commission encourages community input and participation as planning progresses for what promises to be a landmark celebration for Conroe and the nation.
