Conroe ISD Approves $19.2M Employee Pay Plan

**Conroe ISD Approves $19.2 Million Compensation Plan, Boosting Teacher Pay and Benefits**

**Conroe, TX – June 19, 2024** – The Conroe Independent School District (CISD) Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a comprehensive employee compensation plan totaling over $19.2 million for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. The substantial investment aims to enhance recruitment and retention efforts in a competitive educational landscape, particularly in light of ongoing challenges with state funding and the lack of a facilities funding bill from the Texas Legislature.

Under the newly adopted plan, which received approval at the Board’s June 18 meeting, teachers, librarians, counselors, and nurses will receive a 3% raise. This increase is calculated from the midpoint of their respective pay scales, ensuring a significant boost to their annual earnings. The same 3% midpoint raise also extends to administrative, professional, and support staff across the district.

For hourly employees, including bus drivers, food service workers, police officers, crossing guards, and auxiliary staff, the plan guarantees a minimum raise of $0.75 per hour. This ensures a tangible increase for essential support personnel vital to the district’s daily operations.

A key highlight of the new plan is the increase in the starting teacher salary, which will now jump to an impressive $62,000 within CISD. This move is designed to attract top-tier teaching talent directly out of college and from other districts.

Beyond salary increases, CISD is continuing its commitment to comprehensive employee benefits. The district will maintain its coverage of 100% of health insurance premiums for employees enrolled in the TRS ActiveCare 1-HD plan, a significant financial benefit that sets CISD apart from many other employers.

To address critical staffing needs, the district is offering a $2,000 stipend for new-to-the-profession teachers certified in specific high-demand areas. These include Secondary Math, Secondary Science, Secondary English, Bilingual/ESL, and Special Education. Longevity stipends, rewarding long-serving employees, will also continue.

Dr. Curtis Null, Superintendent of Conroe ISD, underscored the district’s unwavering commitment to its staff. “This compensation plan demonstrates our deep commitment to our Conroe ISD employees,” Dr. Null stated. “We understand the immense value our teachers, administrators, and support staff bring to our students and community every day. This investment is crucial for us to remain competitive, attract the best talent, and ensure our students continue to receive an exceptional education.”

The district’s decision comes amidst a challenging statewide environment for public education funding. Despite record state surpluses, the 88th Texas Legislature and subsequent special sessions failed to pass legislation that would significantly increase the basic allotment for public schools or provide dedicated funding for school facilities. This has placed greater pressure on local districts like CISD to use existing funds creatively to address compensation and operational needs.

It’s important to note that CISD Police Officers had already received a separate raise earlier this spring, which was approved by the Board on March 5, 2024. This latest comprehensive plan builds upon that prior commitment to employee welfare.

The approved compensation plan is set to take effect for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, providing a timely boost for district employees as they prepare for the new academic term.
