Conroe ISD Approves 2023-24 Academic Calendar

Conroe ISD has officially finalized its academic schedule for the 2023-2024 school year, with the Board of Trustees giving its unanimous approval to the new calendar at their regularly scheduled January 17 meeting. This decision marks the culmination of a months-long process designed to gather extensive community input and balance the academic needs of students with the practical considerations of families and staff.

Students across Conroe ISD can mark their calendars for Wednesday, August 9, 2023, as the first day back to school. The academic year will then wrap up on Thursday, May 23, 2024. This earlier start date, a common preference expressed in community feedback, allows for the first semester to conclude before the substantial Winter Break, providing a cleaner academic break for students and teachers.

The comprehensive calendar development process began in the fall with a dedicated Calendar Committee, comprised of parents, teachers, campus administrators, and district staff. This committee was tasked with reviewing state requirements, considering instructional minutes, and developing options that addressed various community priorities. Following the committee’s work, a significant public survey was conducted online from November 28 to December 9, 2022. The survey garnered an impressive response, with over 12,000 individuals — including parents, staff, and community members across the district — participating and offering their insights on proposed calendar models.

“We are incredibly proud of the thorough, inclusive process that led to the approval of our 2023-2024 academic calendar,” stated Dr. Curtis Null, Superintendent of Schools. “The overwhelming response to our public survey underscored the community’s engagement and desire to help shape our district’s future. The approved calendar reflects a strong balance of academic rigor, essential professional learning for our staff, and crucial time for families to rest and recharge.”

As for scheduled breaks, students will enjoy a full week off for Thanksgiving, running from November 20-24, 2023, aligning with a tradition valued by many families for travel and family gatherings. A substantial Winter Break will kick off on December 18, 2023, and last through January 1, 2024, with classes resuming on Wednesday, January 3. Spring Break is set for March 11-15, 2024.

Beyond the major holidays, the calendar includes several student holidays which double as professional learning days for staff, allowing educators to engage in crucial training and development without impacting student instructional time. These are scheduled for October 9, 2023; January 2, 2024; February 19, 2024; March 29, 2024; and April 22, 2024.

The district has also strategically designated potential bad weather make-up days. These are set for April 22, 2024, and May 24, 2024. Should these days not be needed for weather-related closures, they will convert into additional days off for students, offering further flexibility.

Looking ahead, graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2024 are tentatively planned for Friday, May 24, 2024. Final confirmation and specific venue details will be announced by the district closer to the date, pending final board approval and coordination with event facilities.

Conroe ISD encourages all parents, students, and staff to review the full academic calendar for the 2023-2024 school year, which is now available on the district’s official website.
