Conroe ISD approves ex-trustee for sub/volunteer

**Conroe ISD Board Approves Former Trustee Michael Nelson for Substitute and Volunteer Roles, Stirring Community Debate**

**CONROE, TX –** The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees voted Tuesday night to approve applications for former trustee Michael Nelson to work as a substitute teacher and volunteer within the district, a decision that has reopened past controversies and sharply divided the community. The vote, held on June 18 at the Conroe ISD Administration Building, passed 6-1, with Trustee Datren Williams casting the sole dissenting vote.

Nelson’s return to the district in a professional capacity comes over a year after his abrupt resignation from the board in April 2023. His departure followed allegations that he sent “inappropriate and unprofessional” text messages to a former student who was, at the time, employed by the district at The Woodlands College Park High School. These texts were reportedly exchanged while Nelson was still serving as an elected board member.

During Tuesday’s meeting, several parents voiced strong objections to Nelson’s approval. Misty Odenweller described the board’s decision as a “slap in the face” to the community, while Tiffany Krouse questioned the message it sends regarding student safety and the accountability of district leaders. The concerns echoed sentiments from March 2023, when the allegations against Nelson first became public, leading to widespread calls for his resignation.

However, board members who voted in favor of Nelson’s applications cited principles of due process and a belief in second chances. They emphasized that Nelson had successfully completed all required background checks, which reportedly revealed no criminal record. Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null confirmed that Nelson had met all district requirements for both volunteer and substitute positions. Some trustees expressed a view that Nelson had already served his “sentence” by resigning from his elected position.

Nelson was initially elected to the Conroe ISD Board of Trustees in November 2020. The allegations against him surfaced in late March 2023, and his resignation became effective on April 24, 2023, just weeks after the controversy broke.

While Nelson will not return as an elected official, the board’s decision means he could soon be present in Conroe ISD classrooms as a substitute teacher or participating in district events as a volunteer. The move underscores an ongoing division within the community regarding accountability, redemption, and the district’s standards for its personnel.
