Conroe Offers Free Narcan Overdose Training

**Conroe Residents Empowered with Life-Saving Narcan Training Amid Rising Opioid Crisis**

CONROE, TX – Conroe residents are stepping up to confront the escalating opioid crisis head-on, with a series of community events providing free Narcan training and distribution. The initiative, aimed at equipping everyday citizens with the tools to reverse an opioid overdose, saw a strong start on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Montgomery County Central Library, drawing a steady stream of participants eager to learn life-saving skills.

From 10 AM to 1 PM, attendees at the library session received comprehensive instruction on identifying the critical signs of an opioid overdose, understanding the straightforward process of administering naloxone (commonly known by its brand name, Narcan) nasal spray, and the immediate necessity of calling 911. Each individual departed with two doses of Narcan, ready for emergency use. The training also highlighted Texas’s “Good Samaritan” law, which provides legal protection for individuals who administer Narcan in good faith during an overdose emergency.

This vital community effort is a collaborative undertaking spearheaded by Montgomery County Precinct 2 Commissioner Charlie Riley’s office, the Montgomery County Public Health District, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), and The Council on Recovery. Commissioner Riley’s office played a crucial role by providing a grant that funded the Narcan doses, ensuring free access for all participants.

“The opioid crisis, particularly with the rise of fentanyl, poses a grave threat to our families and neighborhoods,” stated Commissioner Charlie Riley. “We believe that empowering our community members with Narcan and the knowledge to use it is one of the most proactive steps we can take. My office was proud to help secure the funding to make this vital resource accessible to everyone in Montgomery County, turning bystanders into potential life-savers.”

The urgency behind these events is underscored by alarming statistics. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, is a primary driver of overdose deaths. Often illicitly manufactured and deceptively mixed into other drugs, fentanyl has significantly exacerbated the crisis. Texas witnessed an 11% increase in overdose deaths between 2021 and 2022, underscoring the critical need for robust public awareness and readily available intervention tools like Narcan.

“Narcan is an incredibly effective and user-friendly tool that can reverse an opioid overdose in minutes, providing a crucial window for emergency medical services to arrive,” explained a representative from the Montgomery County Public Health District. “These trainings are not just about drug education; they’re about fostering a prepared, compassionate community that can respond effectively in a crisis. Every dose distributed and every person trained represents a potential life saved.”

For those who were unable to attend the inaugural June 15th session, additional opportunities are available. Training and Narcan distribution will continue at the Conroe Family YMCA on the following dates:

* **Thursday, June 20, 2024:** 4 PM to 7 PM
* **Thursday, July 11, 2024:** 4 PM to 7 PM
* **Thursday, August 8, 2024:** 4 PM to 7 PM

Community organizers encourage all interested individuals to participate in these free sessions. No prior medical experience is necessary, and the training is designed to be accessible and informative for everyone. By learning how to recognize an overdose and administer Narcan, Conroe residents can play a direct role in combating the opioid crisis and saving lives within their community.

For more information on upcoming training sessions or resources related to opioid overdose prevention, residents are encouraged to contact Commissioner Charlie Riley’s office or visit the Montgomery County Public Health District website.
