Dr. Daniela Matei to Direct Houston Methodist Cancer Center

**Renowned Oncologist Dr. Daniela Matei Appointed Director of Houston Methodist Cancer Center**

HOUSTON, TX – Houston Methodist Cancer Center has announced the appointment of Dr. Daniela Matei, a nationally recognized expert in gynecologic oncology, as its new director. Dr. Matei is slated to begin her leadership role on August 1, 2024, succeeding Dr. Jenny C. Chang, who has successfully led the center since 2017.

Dr. Matei comes to Houston Methodist from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where she currently serves as a professor of gynecologic oncology. She also directs the Ovarian Cancer Translational Research Program at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, a testament to her dedication to advancing cancer research and treatment.

Her distinguished career is marked by profound expertise in ovarian and endometrial cancers, particularly in the development of new therapeutic drugs and the identification of crucial biomarkers. With an extensive background, Dr. Matei has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, secured substantial funding from prestigious organizations like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense, and previously held the presidency of the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup. Her influence extends to numerous National Cancer Institute committees, and she has been honored with the American Cancer Society-Pfizer Clinical Research Professorship.

Dr. Edward Jones, interim senior vice president of oncology services for Houston Methodist, underscored the significance of Dr. Matei’s appointment. “Dr. Matei’s deep expertise in gynecologic oncology and her strong track record in clinical trials and translational research make her an exceptional leader for our cancer center,” said Dr. Jones. “Her vision will be crucial in expanding our integrated cancer care, research, and education efforts across the entire Houston area, benefiting countless patients.”

Expressing her excitement, Dr. Matei stated her commitment to fostering a world-class program. “I am incredibly excited to lead such a prominent institution,” Dr. Matei said. “My goal is to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge research with clinical care throughout Houston Methodist’s seven hospitals, driving forward personalized medicine and discovering new, life-changing treatments for our patients.”

Dr. Jenny C. Chang, the outgoing director, also voiced her confidence in the transition. “I have no doubt that Dr. Matei’s leadership will further elevate the center’s reputation and our commitment to delivering the highest quality cancer care,” Dr. Chang remarked.
