Grand Jury No-Bills Conroe ISD Officer in Fatal Crash

**Montgomery County Grand Jury Declines Charges Against Conroe ISD Officer in Fatal Motorcycle Crash**

MONTGOMERY, TX – A Montgomery County Grand Jury has decided against filing criminal charges against Conroe ISD Police Officer Daniel Patrick Macias following a fatal motorcycle collision that occurred on January 25, 2024, resulting in the death of 26-year-old Joshua Daniel Miller of New Caney.

The Grand Jury, after reviewing evidence presented in June 2024, returned a “No-Bill” in the case, indicating they found insufficient probable cause to pursue a criminal indictment against Officer Macias. Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon confirmed the Grand Jury’s decision, closing the chapter on potential criminal proceedings for the officer involved.

The incident took place around 5:45 AM at the busy intersection of FM 1488 and Honea Egypt Road in Montgomery. According to reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Officer Macias, who was on duty and driving a marked Conroe ISD police vehicle, was attempting a U-turn while traveling eastbound on FM 1488. At the same time, Miller was also traveling eastbound on his motorcycle.

Investigators determined that Miller’s motorcycle struck the passenger side of Officer Macias’s vehicle. DPS reports indicated that Miller was operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed at the time of impact. He was ejected from his motorcycle and tragically died at the scene. Officer Macias was uninjured in the collision. At the time of the incident, Officer Macias was not responding to an emergency call, and his vehicle’s lights and sirens were not activated.

The Texas Department of Public Safety conducted a thorough investigation into the crash, including a comprehensive review of all available evidence and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The findings of this investigation were subsequently presented to the Grand Jury for their consideration. DPS has publicly extended its deepest condolences to the family of Joshua Miller.

While the Grand Jury’s decision concludes the criminal aspect of the investigation for Officer Macias, it is common practice for police departments to conduct an internal administrative review following incidents of this nature, separate from any criminal proceedings, to ensure departmental policies and procedures were followed. Conroe ISD Police Department has not yet released a statement regarding any such internal review.

The tragedy leaves the community reflecting on the sudden loss of Joshua Daniel Miller and the procedures that govern interactions between law enforcement and the public on Montgomery County’s often-congested roadways.
