Harris County Prosecutor Fired for Felony Strangulation

**Harris County Assistant DA Fired Following Felony Strangulation Charge in Montgomery County**

**CONROE, TX** – Harris County Assistant District Attorney Alex Bunin was terminated from his position on March 4, 2024, following his indictment on a third-degree felony charge of family violence strangulation in Montgomery County. The charge stems from an alleged incident involving his wife at their home near Willis in February.

According to court records and a sworn statement, the alleged incident occurred on February 19, 2024. Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies initially responded to Bunin’s residence near Willis regarding a domestic disturbance. At the time, his wife, Dr. Pamela Bunin, reportedly declined to press charges. However, she later provided a detailed sworn statement to Montgomery County investigators, outlining the alleged assault.

In her statement, Dr. Bunin reported that an intoxicated Alex Bunin engaged in an argument with her, during which he allegedly strangled her for approximately 10 seconds. She described struggling to breathe and experiencing dizziness as a result.

Based on this sworn testimony, an arrest warrant was issued for Bunin on March 1, 2024, by 9th District Court Judge Phil Grant in Montgomery County. His bond was subsequently set at $30,000. Bunin reportedly turned himself in shortly after the warrant was issued.

Both District Attorneys involved have publicly addressed the serious nature of the allegations. Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon issued a strong statement, emphasizing, “No one is above the law, no matter their profession or position. My office will prosecute this case as we would any other felony family violence case.”

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg confirmed Bunin’s dismissal, stating unequivocally, “An attorney charged with felony family violence cannot serve as a prosecutor in our office. We have a zero-tolerance policy for such accusations, especially against those entrusted with upholding justice.” The Harris County District Attorney’s Office maintains a strict code of conduct for its employees, particularly concerning felony charges, often leading to immediate administrative action or termination.

Bunin, who had been employed with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office since 2020, was reportedly assigned to a felony division during his tenure. He is also the son of prominent federal judge Alfred H. Bunin, who serves on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Under Texas law, family violence strangulation is classified as a third-degree felony if the person intentionally or knowingly impedes the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of a person by applying pressure to the person’s throat or neck or by blocking the person’s nose or mouth. If convicted, Alex Bunin faces a potential sentence of 2 to 10 years in state prison, along with a fine of up to $10,000.

This incident has sent ripples through the legal communities in both Harris and Montgomery counties, underscoring the serious implications of family violence charges, particularly when they involve members of the justice system. The legal process is ongoing, and Bunin is expected to appear in court for arraignment in Montgomery County, where the case will proceed to a grand jury for potential indictment. As of now, Bunin’s legal representation has not issued a public statement regarding the allegations.
