Historic Conroe High Reopens as Landmark 601

CONROE, TX – The historic Conroe High School building at 601 Campbell Street, a downtown landmark since 1930, has officially begun its second chapter, opening its doors on May 9, 2024, as the Landmark 601 Apartments and The Campbell Center. This significant $28 million revitalization project transforms the nearly century-old structure into a vibrant mixed-use hub, offering new housing and a dedicated arts and events space in the heart of Conroe.

The grand opening celebration drew a crowd of local dignitaries and community members eager to witness the culmination of the extensive renovation. Conroe Mayor Jody Czajkoski, Conroe Independent School District (CISD) Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null, State Representative Will Metcalf, and Rob Reaves of Reaves Real Estate were among those who highlighted the project's importance. Speakers emphasized how the endeavor not only preserves a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places but also injects new energy, diverse housing options, and cultural opportunities directly into downtown Conroe.

The building, originally constructed during the Great Depression through a bond package, served as Conroe ISD’s high school until 1970 before transitioning to Peet Junior High. Designed by renowned architect Joseph Finger, also known for his work on Houston City Hall, the structure boasts distinctive Art Deco architectural style. After sitting vacant for a period, the nearly 94-year-old building began its comprehensive renovation in August 2022, spearheaded by Reaves Real Estate.

Landmark 601 Apartments now features 71 market-rate units, providing a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom residences. Many apartments retain original architectural elements, including wood floors, high ceilings, and large, impressive windows that flood the living spaces with natural light, blending historic charm with modern living.

Beyond residential living, the entire ground floor has been dedicated to "The Campbell Center," a brand-new arts and events hub. Managed by the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance, this innovative space includes dedicated gallery areas for local artists, a flexible black box theater for performances and presentations, classrooms for workshops, and various meeting and event spaces. The Campbell Center is poised to become a central point for artistic expression, cultural events, and community gatherings, further enriching Conroe's growing arts scene.
