Houston Ballet Debuts World Premiere of ‘The Great Gatsby’ Ballet, Captivating Audiences

HOUSTON, TX – Houston Ballet has raised the curtain on the world premiere of its dazzling new full-length production of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel, *The Great Gatsby*. The much-anticipated ballet, which kicked off its run on Thursday, March 7th, at the Wortham Theater Center in downtown Houston, promises to transport audiences straight into the heart of the roaring 1920s with its opulent visuals and poignant storytelling.

The ambitious production marks a significant milestone for Houston Ballet and the city’s vibrant arts scene, being the first time a full-length ballet adaptation of *The Great Gatsby* has premiered in Houston. Choreographed by the internationally acclaimed Jorden Morris, known for his narrative ballets such as *Peter Pan* and *Cinderella*, the production delves deep into the emotional landscape of Jay Gatsby’s pursuit of the elusive American Dream and his unrequited love for Daisy Buchanan.

“Bringing *The Great Gatsby* to life on stage through ballet has been an incredible journey,” said Jorden Morris in a statement. “The novel’s themes of passion, obsession, and the glittering yet fragile world of the Jazz Age lend themselves beautifully to the expressive power of dance. We aimed to create a world that is both historically authentic and deeply emotional, drawing the audience into Gatsby’s complex inner life.”

The ballet features an original score by the prolific British composer Carl Davis, whose extensive work includes compositions for film, television, and numerous ballets. His cinematic score, performed live by the exceptional Houston Ballet Orchestra, serves as a dynamic backdrop, enhancing the drama and romance unfolding on stage. Davis’s ability to evoke specific eras and emotions through music is on full display, from the raucous energy of Gatsby’s parties to the quiet despair of his solitude.

The visual grandeur of the production is equally captivating, thanks to the stunning set and costume designs by Peter Farmer, a celebrated designer known for his exquisite work in the ballet world. Farmer’s designs meticulously recreate the luxurious mansions, vibrant parties, and intimate moments of the 1920s, while Christina Giannelli’s evocative lighting design masterfully sets the mood, shifting from celebratory brightness to somber shadows as the story unfolds.

“This production is a testament to the collaborative spirit and artistic excellence that Houston Ballet embodies,” commented Stanton Welch AM, Artistic Director of Houston Ballet. “Jorden Morris and Carl Davis, along with Peter Farmer and Christina Giannelli, have created a truly unique and powerful work that honors Fitzgerald’s masterpiece while pushing the boundaries of classical ballet. It’s a proud moment for our company to host this world premiere.”
