Houston parks and tech hub get bond-funded upgrades

HOUSTON AREA – Voters in the Houston region last November approved significant bond proposals that are now translating into major upgrades for a key economic development zone in Conroe and a beloved downtown Houston park. The Conroe Technology Park is preparing for a $12.3 million overhaul, while Discovery Green is set for its first major renovation since opening, backed by a $20 million bond. Both projects underscore a commitment to enhancing infrastructure, quality of life, and economic competitiveness across the greater Houston area.

**Conroe Technology Park Gears Up for Expansion**

Up in Conroe, the Technology Park is poised for a substantial transformation, fueled by the $12.3 million bond passed by Conroe voters in November 2023. This investment is earmarked for critical infrastructure improvements designed to attract high-tech companies and further solidify Conroe’s position as a hub for innovation and advanced manufacturing.

The ambitious plans include the construction of a new 1.25-mile hike-and-bike trail, aimed at enhancing employee wellness and connectivity within the park. Other vital infrastructure additions encompass a much-needed retention pond to manage stormwater, extensive landscaping improvements to create a more attractive corporate environment, updated entry monument signs for a modern aesthetic, and additional parking to accommodate future growth.

The primary objective behind these enhancements is to make the park more appealing to high-tech companies seeking strategic locations near the Lone Star Executive Airport and Conroe Park North, offering advantages in logistics and business travel. The Conroe City Council officially approved the detailed development plans on June 13, 2024.

“This bond approval and subsequent council action are a clear signal of Conroe’s commitment to fostering a dynamic economic environment,” said a spokesperson for the City of Conroe, emphasizing the potential for job creation and diversification of the local economy. “The upgrades will not only improve functionality but also elevate the park’s aesthetic appeal, making it a premier destination for leading technology firms.”

Construction is anticipated to commence in late 2024 or early 2025, with an expected completion sometime in 2026. Design work for these enhancements is being handled by Re:site, a firm known for its expertise in landscape architecture and urban design. Further details on the project can be found on the City of Conroe’s official website.

**Discovery Green Set for Major Renovation**

Meanwhile, downtown Houston’s iconic Discovery Green park is also slated for a significant facelift, backed by a $20 million bond approved by Houston voters in the same November 2023 election. This marks Phase 2 of the park’s comprehensive master plan and represents its first major renovation since its grand opening in 2008. After more than 15 years as a central gathering place and green oasis, the park is set to receive essential updates to maintain its status as a premier urban amenity.

The renovation plans are extensive and touch upon several key areas of the park. They include a complete overhaul and renovation of the band shell and stage area, promising enhanced acoustics, lighting, and production capabilities to better support the diverse array of performances and events the park hosts. Improvements to the park’s lake and other aquatic features are also planned, focusing on sustainability, water quality, and aesthetic appeal.

Visitors can look forward to brand-new restrooms and significantly enhanced lighting throughout the park, improving safety and the overall experience during evening events. Crucial accessibility upgrades will also be implemented, ensuring the park is welcoming and navigable for all visitors, in compliance with modern ADA standards.

“Discovery Green has become an indispensable part of downtown Houston’s fabric, hosting millions of visitors and countless events since its inception,” stated a representative from the Discovery Green Conservancy, the non-profit organization that operates and maintains the park. “This renovation is vital to address natural wear and tear, update our facilities to contemporary standards, and ensure the park remains a vibrant, accessible, and beloved public space for decades to come.”

Construction on Discovery Green is expected to begin in Fall 2024 and is projected to wrap up by Spring 2026. The architectural and design work for this ambitious renovation is a collaborative effort between Page, a multidisciplinary design firm, and Rhotenberry Wellen Architects, both with extensive experience in civic and cultural projects. Both the Conroe Technology Park and Discovery Green projects signify strategic public investments aimed at enhancing regional economic vitality and improving the quality of life for residents and visitors throughout the Houston area.
