Kitty Light, Conroe Bookseller and Advocate, Dies

Conroe bids farewell to a beloved literary icon and community pillar, Georgiana “Kitty” Light, who passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the age of 92. Known for her radiant smile, sparkling eyes, and unwavering dedication to the power of words, Light left an indelible mark on downtown Conroe and beyond.

For three decades, from 1974 to 2004, Kitty and her late husband, Walter L. “Pete” Light, nurtured Light’s Book Store on Main Street into more than just a retail establishment. It became a vibrant cornerstone of the community, a tranquil haven for readers, a popular gathering spot for local and visiting authors, and a quiet retreat where knowledge and conversation flourished.

“Kitty Light was a true treasure to Conroe,” said long-time resident Margaret Thompson. “Her bookstore was a magical place. You could always find her there, ready with a recommendation or a warm chat. She didn’t just sell books; she cultivated a love for reading and connected people through stories. The store closed, but her spirit never did.”

Light’s commitment to her community extended far beyond the shelves of her beloved bookstore. She was a vital force in Conroe’s significant revitalization efforts during the 1980s, dedicating countless hours to shaping the city’s future. Her passion for the arts and education saw her serve on numerous influential boards, including the Conroe Art League, the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, and the Conroe Area Literacy Council. Through these roles, she passionately championed local culture and literacy, mentoring aspiring writers and encouraging students to embrace reading.

“Kitty’s impact on our cultural landscape is immeasurable,” commented Robert Miller, a board member with the Conroe Symphony Orchestra. “Her belief in the importance of arts and literacy for a thriving community was a driving force. She brought so much energy and vision to every project she touched, inspiring us all to do more.”

Her extensive and heartfelt contributions did not go unnoticed. Light received prestigious recognitions, including the coveted Downtowner of the Year award, celebrating her role in invigorating the city center, and the Mayor’s Award of Excellence, honoring her overall dedication to Conroe.

Kitty Light was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Pete, in 2011. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Georgiana “Gina” Light and Laura Light Johnson, and her two cherished grandsons.

A visitation for friends and family is scheduled for Thursday, May 23, from 5-7 p.m. at Cashner Funeral Home, located at 801 Teas Road in Conroe. A celebration of Kitty’s remarkable life will take place on Friday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church Conroe, situated at 4308 W. Davis St. Interment will follow at Garden Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Kitty’s memory to either the Conroe Art League or the First United Methodist Church Conroe, continuing her legacy of supporting the arts and community spirituality. Her memory will continue to inspire generations of readers and community advocates in Conroe.
