**Kristin Keough Clinches Montgomery County Judge GOP Nomination by Razor-Thin 18 Votes After Close Count**

**MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX –** Kristin Keough has officially secured the Republican nomination for Montgomery County Judge, clinching a victory by an incredibly slim margin of just 18 votes over opponent Billy Daugherty. The final count, certified on Thursday, May 30th, at 5 p.m. by the Commissioners Court, concluded a fiercely contested primary runoff election and confirmed Keough’s win.

The runoff election, held on Tuesday, May 28th, saw Keough tally 14,082 votes, or 50.05% of the total ballots cast. Daugherty received 14,064 votes, representing 49.95% of the 28,146 total votes. This razor-thin difference of just 0.10% of the vote necessitated a meticulous review of all ballots, including provisional votes, which ultimately did not alter the outcome. The Montgomery County Elections Administrator’s office oversaw the rigorous counting process, ensuring accuracy in the extremely close contest.

“It’s just relief,” Keough stated upon hearing the final numbers. “I’m just really grateful and humbled for all the support and all the people that stepped out and voted for me. I’m just so thankful.” Keough, a former Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace, will now advance as the Republican nominee for one of the county’s top administrative positions.

Billy Daugherty, who previously served as Chief of Staff for current County Judge Mark Keough (who is not related to Kristin Keough), graciously conceded the race following the certification. He confirmed he had called Keough to offer his congratulations, acknowledging the hard-fought nature of the contest and the definitive will of the voters.

This nail-biting finish followed a competitive initial primary on March 5th, where Daugherty had initially led the field with 40% of the vote. Kristin Keough secured 34%, earning her spot in the runoff. Incumbent County Judge Mark Keough came in third with 25% of the vote, failing to make the runoff and setting the stage for a new leader for the rapidly growing county. Given Montgomery County’s strong Republican leanings, the Republican primary is often considered the de facto election for many county-wide offices.

The Montgomery County Judge serves as the chief administrative officer for the county and presides over the Commissioners Court, which is the county’s primary governing body. This pivotal role involves significant responsibilities related to the county budget, overseeing various county departments, leading emergency management efforts, and representing the county in numerous capacities. While the title includes “Judge,” the position’s judicial duties are limited, primarily focusing on administrative and executive functions, as well as certain probate matters and mental health commitments.
