Magnolia West Begins Bi-District Playoff Series

MAGNOLIA, TX – The Magnolia West Mustangs baseball squad is diving headfirst into the postseason, beginning their quest for a state title this week in the UIL Class 5A Bi-District Playoffs. The Mustangs concluded their regular season with an impressive 21-10 overall record, securing the second seed in the highly competitive District 19-5A with an 11-3 league mark, just behind district champion Lake Creek.

Their bi-district series, the opening round of the UIL state playoffs, will pit them against the Pflugerville Weiss Wolves, a formidable opponent that finished third in District 20-5A with a 22-9 overall record. This best-of-three series is set to challenge both teams, with games scheduled across the weekend.

The series schedule is as follows:
* **Game 1:** Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station.
* **Game 2:** Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at Magnolia West High School in Magnolia, Texas.
* **Game 3 (if necessary):** Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m., back at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station.

Fans planning to attend are encouraged to check the official Magnolia West Athletics website or the Pflugerville Weiss High School athletics pages for ticket information, streaming options, and any potential last-minute updates to game times or locations.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Todd Thompson, the Mustangs enter the playoffs feeling confident, particularly in their pitching and defense, which Thompson identifies as the team’s bedrock strengths. The pitching staff boasts significant depth, featuring senior James Glasscock, a Blinn College commit, along with junior Brandon Martens, junior Dawson Martyn, and sophomore Cole Taylor, providing a strong rotation for a deep playoff run.

Offensively, the Mustangs are led by senior JD Gregson, who has been a standout at the plate with a remarkable .439 batting average, 3 home runs, and 25 RBIs. He’s supported by juniors Ethan Mendenhall and Braydon Elley, both consistently hitting well above .350, providing crucial offensive firepower throughout the lineup.

Coach Thompson highlighted the benefits of their challenging District 19-5A schedule, stating it served as excellent preparation for the intense environment of playoff baseball. “Our tough district schedule really got us ready,” Thompson remarked. “We faced some great teams week in and week out, and that experience is invaluable heading into the playoffs.”

Adding to their readiness, many of the current Mustang players were part of last year’s squad that made a deep playoff run to the regional finals, ultimately falling to Georgetown. This firsthand experience of high-stakes playoff baseball is expected to be a significant asset this season, fostering composure and determination under pressure.

“We have a lot of guys who have been there before, who understand what it takes to win in the playoffs,” Thompson added, emphasizing a focused, game-by-game approach against the Wolves. “Weiss is a good hitting team, so we’ll need to stay sharp and take it one pitch, one inning, one game at a time.”

The winner of this Bi-District series will advance to the Area Round of the UIL Class 5A playoffs, continuing their pursuit of the coveted state championship. The entire Magnolia community is rallying behind the Mustangs as they embark on what they hope will be another memorable playoff journey.
