**From Landfill to Landmark: 198-Acre Nature Sanctuary to Transform Montgomery County by 2027**

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – A significant 198-acre nature sanctuary, envisioned to become a flagship ecological and recreational asset, is slated to open in Montgomery County by 2027. The ambitious project will transform the former Willis Landfill site, located at 17148 FM 830, roughly positioned between I-45 and Lake Conroe, through an initial $11 million investment.

The as-yet-unnamed park represents a major undertaking in environmental rehabilitation and public land development. Funding for the project’s initial phase includes a substantial $5 million grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), secured late last year following a competitive application process. The Montgomery County Commissioners Court solidified the financial foundation in May 2024, approving the remaining $6 million contribution from the county. Construction is targeted for completion by early 2027, with a formal opening anticipated later that year.

Upon completion, the sanctuary will feature a comprehensive network of nature trails designed for walking and exploration, elevated boardwalks offering unique perspectives of the landscape, and observation decks strategically placed to highlight the area’s diverse natural features and wildlife. Educational signage will be installed throughout the park, providing visitors with insights into local flora and fauna, fostering environmental awareness and appreciation.

Future development plans for Phase 2 include the construction of a multi-purpose building, intended to serve as a hub for visitors and educational programs. There is also a long-term vision for the sanctuary to seamlessly connect with the City of Conroe’s planned linear park system, creating a more extensive network of green spaces and recreational opportunities for residents across the region.

The site’s history is central to its remarkable transformation. What will soon be a sanctuary operated as the Willis Landfill from 1974 to 1999. Following its closure, the Conroe Independent School District (CISD) acquired the property, utilizing it for various agricultural programs over several years. In a move underscoring community collaboration and a shared vision for public benefit, CISD eventually sold the land to Montgomery County for a symbolic one dollar, setting the stage for its current metamorphosis. This unique past highlights the significant environmental rehabilitation and ecological restoration efforts now underway.

Commissioner Robert Walker, a vocal proponent of the project, emphasized its importance, describing it as “a big deal for Montgomery County.” Walker lauded the extensive collaboration involved, noting the partnership across various county departments, the Conroe Independent School District, and state agencies like TPWD. “This is a prime example of what we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal,” Walker stated.

Jason Millsaps, Director of the Montgomery County Parks Department, expressed profound excitement about the venture. “This sanctuary is poised to become a flagship park for the entire county,” Millsaps remarked, anticipating its role in enhancing the quality of life for residents and attracting eco-tourism.

Further partnerships are also being explored, including discussions with Lone Star College, to enhance educational programming and community engagement at the new sanctuary. These collaborations aim to leverage the park as a living laboratory for students and a valuable resource for lifelong learning. The transformation of the former landfill into a vibrant nature sanctuary represents a significant step forward in Montgomery County’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public recreation.
