Players Present Inclusive IDD Cabaret The S.P.O.T. Light

**Conroe’s The Players Illuminates Inclusivity with Groundbreaking ‘The S.P.O.T. Light’ Production**

Conroe, TX – The Players, Conroe’s esteemed community theater group, is set to open a truly groundbreaking and inclusive production, “The S.P.O.T. Light” (short for “Supporting Performers of Today”), with its grand opening slated for Friday, June 14th, at The Owen Theatre. This pioneering show, specifically designed to create a vibrant stage for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), will run through Sunday, June 23rd, with performances on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Located at the heart of downtown Conroe at 225 Metcalf St., The Owen Theatre will host what’s described as a “cabaret-style performance” rather than a traditional play. Audiences can expect an inspiring variety show where participants perform acts they’ve personally chosen, showcasing a diverse range of talents from singing and dancing to poetry, comedy, and instrumental music.

“We wanted to create a space where every performer could truly shine, bringing their unique talents and personalities to the stage,” said Director Lisa Palmer. “It’s about celebrating their abilities and fostering a profound sense of belonging within the performing arts community. The enthusiasm and dedication from our cast have been absolutely infectious since rehearsals kicked off in mid-April.”

This special initiative is a powerful collaboration with The S.P.O.T. (Supporting Parents of Today), a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting families affected by IDD. The project is helmed by the experienced Palmer family team: Lisa Palmer as Director, Sarah Palmer as Stage Manager, and Philip Palmer serving as Technical Director.

The idea for “The S.P.O.T. Light” stemmed from the Palmer family’s personal experience with both IDD and the performing arts. Recognizing a significant need for more inclusive artistic outlets, they envisioned a production that would provide opportunities often hard to find for this population. This venture marks a significant and meaningful new chapter for The Players, a community institution known for fostering local talent and enriching Conroe’s cultural landscape.

A notable addition to the performance schedule is the show on Saturday, June 22nd, which will be a “Sensory Friendly Performance.” This particular showing is thoughtfully adapted for audience members with sensory sensitivities, featuring adjustments like lower sound levels, brighter house lights, and a more relaxed environment.

“The Sensory Friendly Performance is a testament to our commitment to making theatre accessible to everyone,” explained Sarah Palmer. “We want every member of our community to feel welcome and comfortable enjoying the magic of live performance.”

Tickets for “The S.P.O.T. Light” are available for $25 and can be purchased online at OwenTheatre.com or by calling the box office directly at 936-539-4400. This production truly highlights The Players’ dedication to broadening access to the arts and celebrating the diverse talents within the Conroe community, promising an uplifting experience for both performers and audiences alike.
