Players Theatre Presents Jesus Christ Superstar

**The Players Theatre Delivers Electrifying “Reimagined” *Jesus Christ Superstar* in Conroe**

CONROE, TX – The Players Theatre Company (TPTC) has ignited the stage at the historic Owen Theatre with its ambitious and “reimagined for a modern audience” production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s iconic rock opera, *Jesus Christ Superstar*. Kicking off its run on June 7th, the production promises a fresh take on the classic story, and audiences still have time to experience it live through June 23rd.

Set against the backdrop of the final seven days of Christ’s life, the musical delves into the complex relationships and political machinations surrounding Jesus, primarily seen through the disillusioned eyes of Judas Iscariot. This TPTC rendition promises to honor the groundbreaking rock score while infusing contemporary elements to resonate with today’s audiences. Director Jeff Baldwin notes, “Our goal was to strip away some of the traditional expectations and focus on the raw human drama and timeless themes of betrayal, faith, and leadership that are so powerfully embedded in Lloyd Webber’s music and Rice’s lyrics. It’s a show that continues to provoke thought and emotion, and we wanted to ensure our interpretation felt immediate and relevant.”

Leading the charge for this ambitious production is Director Jeff Baldwin, known for his dynamic vision within the local theatre scene. He is joined by Laura Koesters, who brings the famous rock score to life as Musical Director, and Kathleen Renken, whose choreography adds a modern edge to the storytelling. The synergy of this creative team is evident in the production’s vibrant energy and thoughtful execution.

On stage, the demanding roles are filled by a talented local cast. Matt Peters commands the stage as Jesus, delivering a performance that explores the immense pressure and internal conflict of the role. Justin Ray offers a compelling and nuanced portrayal of Judas, bringing depth to the character often seen simply as a villain. Rounding out the central trio is Melody Montez as Mary Magdalene, whose performance captures the compassion and quiet strength of the character.

*Jesus Christ Superstar*, which began as a concept album in 1970 before its Broadway debut, revolutionized musical theatre with its rock aesthetic and controversial yet poignant take on the biblical narrative. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its powerful music and examination of universal human experiences. The Players Theatre Company, a long-standing fixture in Conroe’s cultural landscape, continues its tradition of bringing high-quality and thought-provoking theatre to the community with this latest endeavor.

Performances are held Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, and Sundays at 2 PM at the Owen Theatre, located at 225 Metcalf Street, Conroe, Texas 77301.
