Pulitzer-Winner English at Houston’s Alley

**Pulitzer Prize-Winning Play ‘English’ Captivates Audiences at Alley Theatre Through June 30**

Houston, TX – The Alley Theatre is currently presenting the Houston premiere of Sanaz Toossi’s acclaimed “English,” winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Staged in the intimate Neuhaus Theatre, the production began previews on June 4th, officially opening to critical praise on June 7th, and will run through Sunday, June 30th.

Toossi’s compelling play transports audiences to an English language classroom in Karaj, Iran, where four adult students—Roya, Omid, Goli, and Elham—are meticulously preparing for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam. Under the guidance of their teacher, Marjan, these individuals navigate not only the complexities of a new language but also profound personal journeys of identity, aspiration, and cultural assimilation.

The stellar cast features Marjan Neshat as Marjan, the dedicated teacher; Amir Malaklou as Omid; Saba Shahrjerdi as Goli; and Christine Mirzayan as Elham. Each actor brings depth and nuance to their portrayal of characters grappling with the desire for a new future while confronting the potential loss of their native tongue and cultural ties.

“English” delves into the intricate relationship between language and identity, exploring the often-humorous and sometimes heartbreaking challenges faced by those learning to express themselves in a foreign tongue. The play’s title itself carries a clever double meaning, subtly hinting at “English kind,” suggesting a universal need for empathy and understanding across cultural divides.

Alley Theatre Artistic Director Rob Melrose expressed his enthusiasm for bringing Toossi’s celebrated work to Houston. “Sanaz Toossi’s ‘English’ is a masterful blend of humor and profound insight, offering a window into the human experience of navigating cultural shifts and personal ambition,” said Melrose. “It’s a timely and deeply resonant play that explores what it means to find your voice, both literally and figuratively, and we are honored to present this Pulitzer-winning work to our audiences.”

Since its Off-Broadway debut in 2022, “English” has garnered widespread critical acclaim for its sharp dialogue, relatable characters, and poignant exploration of assimilation. The 2023 Pulitzer Prize committee praised the play as a “quietly powerful play about the ways language can expand and limit a life.”

The Alley Theatre, a leading regional theatre company located at 615 Texas Ave in downtown Houston, continues its tradition of bringing thought-provoking and high-quality theatrical productions to the community. Performances for “English” are scheduled throughout the week, with evening and matinee options available.

Tickets for “English” are available now and can be purchased online at alleytheatre.org, by calling the Box Office at (713) 220-5700, or in person at the Alley Theatre Box Office. Patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets soon, as the limited engagement is expected to sell out. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this powerful and moving play before it closes on June 30th.
