Rotary’s Four-Way Test: Evolution & Relevance

The Woodlands Rotary Club to Host Insightful Discussion on Ethical Leadership and the Enduring Four-Way Test

The Woodlands, TX – The Rotary Club of The Woodlands is set to host a special event delving into the “Evolution of Rotary’s Four-Way Test and Its Values System” on **Monday, July 29, 2024**. This program, open to the public, will provide a comprehensive look at the ethical framework that has guided Rotarians and countless others for nearly a century. The event is scheduled from **11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.** at The **Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center**, located at 1601 Lake Robbins Drive in The Woodlands, Texas.

Featured as the insightful discussion’s speaker is Larry Hazen, a respected past president of The Woodlands Rotary and former District 5910 governor from 2020-2021. Hazen, a retired ExxonMobil executive with a distinguished career in business leadership, brings a unique perspective to the enduring relevance of ethical principles in both corporate and community spheres. He will guide attendees through the historical development and ongoing significance of the Four-Way Test, a set of guiding questions designed to foster integrity and sound decision-making: “Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

The Four-Way Test, now a bedrock principle of Rotary International, originated in 1932 with Herbert J. Taylor, then president of the struggling Club Aluminum Products company. Faced with potential bankruptcy during the Great Depression, Taylor sought a simple ethical guide to help his employees navigate difficult decisions and rebuild trust with customers and suppliers. Its success in transforming his company led to its adoption by Rotary International in 1943, subsequently making it a global standard for ethical conduct.

Hazen’s presentation aims to explore how these guiding questions, despite their origins in a different era, remain profoundly applicable in today’s complex personal, professional, and community landscapes. He will highlight the test’s critical role in fostering effective leadership, ethical decision-making, and building stronger, more trustworthy relationships. “The Four-Way Test is more than just a set of questions; it’s a philosophy that empowers individuals to act with integrity and contribute positively to their communities,” Hazen commented. “I look forward to discussing how these timeless values continue to shape leaders and organizations, fostering trust and collaboration in an ever-changing world.”

The Rotary Club of The Woodlands, part of a global network of community volunteers, focuses on bringing together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and advance goodwill and peace around the world. Hosting this discussion underscores the club’s commitment to promoting ethical leadership and community betterment locally.

Community members, Rotary members, and guests interested in ethics, leadership development, or the history of community service organizations are strongly encouraged to attend. The cost for the event is **$40**, which includes lunch and the program, providing an excellent opportunity for networking and engagement. For those solely interested in the program, the cost is **$20**.
