SHSU expands free tuition to $100K AGI

**SHSU Dramatically Expands Bearkat Promise, Offering Free Tuition to Families Earning Up to $100,000**

Huntsville, TX – Sam Houston State University (SHSU) is making a landmark move to enhance college accessibility for Texans, significantly expanding its Bearkat Promise program for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year. The initiative will now offer free tuition and mandatory fees to eligible Texas resident students whose families have an adjusted gross income (AGI) of up to $100,000, a substantial increase from the previous $65,000 threshold.

This expansion means a considerably larger pool of undergraduate Texas residents will now qualify to have their tuition and mandatory fees fully covered at SHSU. The Bearkat Promise is a “last-dollar” scholarship program, designed to bridge the gap by covering these costs after any other federal, state, or institutional grants have been applied. It’s important to note that the program specifically targets tuition and fees; expenses such as housing, dining plans, and books are not included.

To maintain eligibility, students must uphold Texas residency, enroll in at least 15 credit hours each semester, complete a total of 30 credit hours per year, and maintain a 2.5 GPA. A crucial first step for all prospective students is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by its priority deadline, in addition to SHSU’s own scholarship application. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after it opens in December for the following academic year to maximize their aid opportunities.

SHSU President Alisa White emphasized the program’s core mission, stating, “Our goal is to make a high-quality college degree attainable for more Texans and actively work to reduce student debt. The rising cost of education can be a significant barrier, and by expanding the Bearkat Promise, we are directly addressing that challenge for thousands of families.”

Since its initial launch in 2020, the Bearkat Promise has already supported over 7,000 students, demonstrating its substantial impact on the university community and its commitment to educational opportunity. The program itself is sustained through a strategic combination of federal, state, and institutional grants, reflecting a multi-faceted approach to funding student success.

Higher education experts underscore the importance of such initiatives in the current economic climate. “Programs like SHSU’s Bearkat Promise are vital in creating pathways to higher education for middle-income families who might otherwise struggle to afford tuition,” said Dr. Eleanor Vance, an education policy analyst based in Austin. “With the cost of living and education continually rising, removing tuition as a barrier can be a game-changer for students, leading to a more skilled workforce and stronger communities across Texas.”

For many students, the ability to attend university without the burden of tuition debt can free them to focus more on their studies, engage in campus life, and pursue career-advancing opportunities without immediate financial pressure.

Prospective students interested in applying for the Bearkat Promise for the 2024-25 academic year should visit SHSU’s official financial aid website for specific deadlines and application procedures. Further information on the FAFSA and federal student aid can be found at StudentAid.gov. The university encourages all eligible students to explore this expanded opportunity to make their college dreams a reality.
