SOAR Program Unites for Economic Growth

Conroe, Texas – Members of the Conroe Noon Lions Club received an insightful presentation this past Tuesday, June 18th, from Dr. Sarah Miller, Interim President of Lone Star College-Montgomery. Dr. Miller detailed the Strategic Opportunities and Resources (SOAR) program, a new initiative spearheaded by The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce designed to foster greater collaboration across the region.

The SOAR program, which officially launched on March 7th, 2024, with a well-attended kickoff event attracting over 100 community leaders, aims to create a unified platform for businesses, local government, and educational institutions. Its core mission is to bridge existing gaps, drive economic development, enhance the local workforce, and improve talent retention within the Montgomery County region.

Dr. Miller, whose professional background includes extensive experience in workforce development at Lone Star College, emphasized the critical need for such a program. “At Lone Star College-Montgomery, we are deeply committed to preparing our students for successful careers and meeting the evolving needs of local industries,” Dr. Miller stated. “SOAR provides an essential framework to ensure our educational pathways align seamlessly with employer demands, cultivating a stronger, more resilient local economy for everyone.”

The initiative focuses on several key areas, including developing robust talent retention and advancement strategies, increasing employer engagement to create more direct pipelines for employment, and significantly expanding opportunities for internships and apprenticeship programs. A crucial component of SOAR is also the systematic gathering of vital economic data and performing strategic forecasting to proactively understand and address future community needs and challenges.

JJ Hollie, President & CEO of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, described SOAR as a “dynamic platform” built specifically to ensure the continued economic vitality and collaborative spirit of the area. “The success of our businesses, the growth of our workforce, and the overall prosperity of our community are intrinsically linked,” Hollie remarked. “SOAR is our commitment to proactive, united action to solidify these foundations for generations to come.”

The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, a significant civic organization boasting a membership of 170 businesses, 150 non-profits and community leaders, and 12 cities and economic development entities, is positioning SOAR as a cornerstone of its community engagement and strategic planning efforts. The program is expected to directly benefit local businesses seeking skilled talent, students looking for career opportunities, and residents benefiting from a thriving local economy.

For those interested in learning more or getting involved, the next major SOAR event is already scheduled for October 24th, 2024. Additional details regarding the event and the SOAR program can be found on The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce website at woodlandschamber.org.
