T-6 Texan Ace in the Hole Set for Return Flight

**Historic T-6 Texan “Ace in the Hole” Returns to Skies After Crucial Propeller Replacement**

**CONROE, TX –** The skies over Conroe are set to welcome back a familiar and beloved sight this weekend, as the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Gulf Coast Wing successfully completes a critical propeller replacement on its historic T-6 Texan, “Ace in the Hole.” The vintage warbird, a cornerstone of local aviation history and educational outreach, has been grounded for months but is now poised for its inaugural flight with the new component this coming Saturday, June 15, 2024.

Operating out of the Lone Star Flight Museum and based at Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport (KCXO), the CAF Gulf Coast Wing’s dedicated volunteers worked diligently through early June to install the brand new propeller. This marks a significant milestone for the aircraft, which has been out of commission since early March 2024.

The original propeller suffered damage attributed to “stress from high-performance operations,” a challenge not uncommon for these meticulously maintained vintage aircraft that continue to operate as they once did decades ago. The incident sidelined “Ace in the Hole” for several critical months, forcing it to miss various airshows, community events, and vital educational outreach programs designed to keep World War II history alive for new generations.

The replacement propeller alone came with a substantial price tag of $75,000. This considerable cost was largely mitigated through a dedicated fundraiser, demonstrating strong community support for the CAF’s mission. Donations poured in from aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike, underscoring the deep appreciation for “Ace in the Hole” and its role in preserving aviation heritage.

With the new propeller securely in place and all pre-flight checks completed, volunteer pilot Major John “Griff” Griffith is scheduled to conduct the T-6 Texan’s first flight this Saturday. This flight will not only test the new component but also signify the aircraft’s full return to service.

Ken Johnson, Operations Officer for the CAF Gulf Coast Wing, emphasized the aircraft’s profound importance. “The T-6 Texan isn’t just a plane; it’s a living classroom,” Johnson stated. “It serves a crucial role as a teaching tool, allowing us to connect directly with the public, especially younger generations, to share the stories and experiences of World War II and the ‘Greatest Generation.’ Being grounded meant a loss for our educational programs, and we are thrilled to have ‘Ace in the Hole’ back in the air.”

The T-6 Texan was a primary advanced trainer for thousands of Allied pilots during World War II and the Korean War, earning nicknames like “The Pilot Maker.” “Ace in the Hole” offers a tangible link to this pivotal era, regularly participating in airshows and events to provide an immersive historical experience.
