Texas Monks Complete 300-Mile Peace March

**Buddhist Monks Conclude 300-Mile ‘Texas March for Peace,’ Inspiring Community in The Woodlands**

THE WOODLANDS, TX – Four Buddhist monks, led by Venerable Maha Boowa, successfully completed an arduous 300-mile pilgrimage across Texas on May 3, concluding their “Texas Monks March for Peace” at The Woodlands Buddhist Center. The two-week journey, which began at the Texas State Capitol building in Austin on April 20, aimed to promote global peace, highlight the suffering of war victims, and foster kindness and interfaith dialogue.

Venerable Maha Boowa, joined by Venerable Chanyarak, Venerable Phramaha, and Venerable Ananda, trekked through diverse Texas landscapes, passing through towns including Bastrop, Giddings, Brenham, College Station, Navasota, Montgomery, and Conroe. Their pilgrimage presented significant challenges, as the monks navigated sweltering Texas heat, torrential rains, and even hail, all while contending with active road traffic. Despite these hurdles, their dedication resonated deeply with communities along their route.

Throughout their extensive walk, the saffron-robed monks received unwavering support from Texans, who generously provided provisions of food, water, and shelter. For their safety, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and various local law enforcement agencies provided escorts, ensuring the peaceful continuation of their mission.

The primary objective of this demanding trek was to draw attention to the urgent need for global peace, particularly for those affected by conflicts in regions like Ukraine, and to inspire universal compassion. The monks also sought to bridge understanding between different faiths and promote a spirit of shared humanity.

The successful completion of their march was commemorated with a special celebration hosted by The Rotary Club of The Woodlands on May 6 at The Woodlands Christian Academy. Rotary President Jeff Jones spoke passionately about how the monks’ mission for peace aligns perfectly with Rotary International’s core values, which emphasize building goodwill and understanding. Immediate Past President Julia West and incoming president Chris Seay were also present to honor the monks.

Reverend William Phipps from The Woodlands First Baptist Church shared how his congregation had actively provided aid to the monks during their journey, commending their selfless dedication and the powerful message they carried. Paul L. St. John Jr., also from The Woodlands First Baptist Church, further emphasized the profound and lasting impact that individual efforts can have in achieving peace on a broader scale.

Reflecting on the extensive journey, Venerable Maha Boowa underscored that true peace fundamentally originates “in our hearts.” He generously shared the spiritual merit accumulated from their 300-mile walk with everyone who supported their message and efforts, extending blessings to the entire community that embraced them. The “Texas Monks March for Peace” serves as a powerful testament to the enduring human desire for peace and the unifying power of spiritual dedication.
