UIL 5A Baseball Semifinals: West vs. Lake Creek

**UIL 5A Region III Semifinals: Reigning Champion Lake Creek Set for Showdown with Rival Magnolia West**

Anticipation is building in the UIL Class 5A Region III baseball semifinals as the reigning state champion Lake Creek Lions prepare to face their fierce District 21-5A rivals, the Magnolia West Mustangs. This best-of-three series, a battle for a coveted spot in the regional championship, is set to kick off Thursday, May 23.

Game 1 of the pivotal series is scheduled for Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m., and will be held at Lake Creek High School. The action then shifts to Magnolia West High School for Game 2 on Friday, May 24, also at 7 p.m. Should the series extend to a decisive third game, it will be played Saturday, May 25, at 2 p.m. at Grand Oaks High School.

Lake Creek, under the leadership of Coach Mike May, enters the semifinals with an impressive 33-7 record, carrying the momentum of their 2023 state championship victory. The Lions boast a formidable pitching staff, featuring key arms like Blake, Connor, and Kaeden, complemented by a potent lineup with powerful hitters such as Cody and Jax.

Magnolia West, guided by Coach Justin Doughty, is equally formidable, sporting a solid 28-10 record this season. The Mustangs’ pitching rotation is anchored by talented hurlers Ethan, Zane, and Gage, with Hunter expected to be a significant threat at the plate.

This matchup is far from unfamiliar territory for either team. As District 21-5A rivals, Lake Creek and Magnolia West have a history of intense contests. During the regular season, the Lions took two out of three games against the Mustangs. The stakes are even higher given last year’s playoff outcome, where Lake Creek ended Magnolia West’s season in the regional quarterfinals, undoubtedly adding an extra layer of motivation for the Mustangs in this rematch.

Both coaches have acknowledged the intense familiarity and the evenly matched nature of their teams, emphasizing that the series could truly go either way. Local baseball fans are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and unpredictable battle. The winner of this highly anticipated series will advance to compete for the regional title, moving one step closer to a state championship bid.
