West Tops Lake Creek, Claims Sole District Lead

**Magnolia West Seizes Sole Possession of 21-5A Lead with Decisive Win Over Lake Creek**

MAGNOLIA – Magnolia West delivered a commanding performance on Tuesday, April 16th, defeating rival Lake Creek 5-2 at Lions Field to seize sole possession of first place in the highly competitive District 21-5A baseball standings. The crucial victory propelled the Mustangs to an impressive 11-1 district record and 21-3 overall, while the Lake Creek Lions slipped to 10-2 in district play and 19-6 overall.

The game’s narrative was largely dominated by Magnolia West’s junior pitcher, Carson Carey, who authored a masterful complete-game effort. Carey stifled the potent Lake Creek offense, scattering just six hits and allowing only two runs over seven innings. He demonstrated pinpoint control, striking out five batters while issuing just one walk, keeping the Lions off balance throughout the contest.

“Carson was absolutely locked in tonight,” praised Magnolia West Head Coach Jeff Hulme after the game. “He commanded his fastball and mixed in his off-speed pitches beautifully. He gave us exactly what we needed on the mound against a tough lineup.”

The Mustangs’ offense broke the game open in a decisive third inning, exploding for all five of their runs. Senior Brandon Fierro ignited the rally with a towering two-run home run, sending a jolt through the dugout. Following Fierro’s blast, Mason Lampe continued the charge with an RBI triple, and Jackson Blank then tacked on another run with an RBI single. The offensive onslaught ultimately forced Lake Creek starting pitcher Kasen Hammock out of the game after just three innings, in which he surrendered all five runs on eight hits.

Lake Creek attempted to mount a comeback, getting on the board in the bottom of the third when Blake Brown scored after being hit by a pitch, followed by a Jace Garcia RBI single. They added another run in the sixth inning courtesy of an RBI single from Preston Hoffpauir. However, their offense couldn’t solve Carey, who consistently made key pitches to escape jams.

While the Lions’ bats struggled against Carey, their bullpen provided a bright spot. Senior Sammy Pleitez entered the game in relief for Hammock and was lights out, shutting down the Mustangs’ offense over four impressive scoreless innings. Pleitez struck out four batters and did not allow a single hit, showcasing the depth of Lake Creek’s pitching staff.

“Give credit to Carey, he pitched a fantastic game tonight,” said Lake Creek Head Coach Mike Meador. “We just couldn’t string enough hits together against him. But I was incredibly proud of Sammy Pleitez for coming in and shutting them down cold. That shows the kind of grit and resilience this team possesses.”

The stakes are incredibly high as these two district titans are set for a crucial rematch this Friday, April 19th, at Mustangs Field in Magnolia. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. A win for Magnolia West would clinch the District 21-5A title outright, securing a top seed heading into the playoffs. Conversely, a Lake Creek victory would force a tie atop the standings with just two district games remaining for each team after that matchup, setting up a thrilling sprint to the finish.

Both teams are expected to bring their best in what promises to be another intense chapter in their district rivalry. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the pivotal showdown.
