Conroe Exhibit: Line, Artistry, Teaching Legacy

Conroe, TX – The Conroe Art League (CAL) Gallery, nestled within the historic Madeley Building, has unveiled a compelling new exhibition, “Lines, Legends, Limitless Talent,” running now through Saturday, March 30, 2024. Curated by renowned artist and educator Joe Kolb, the show offers a unique exploration of artistic mentorship and the fundamental role of the “line” in diverse creative expressions, featuring works by Kolb, his former student and colleague Craig Markwardt, and the late Lynn P. Kelly.

Kicking off on Saturday, March 2, this unique exhibition invites visitors to trace the foundational element of the line through a range of artistic interpretations. It’s not merely a collection of art, but a profound narrative of influence, demonstrating how teaching lineages shape and inspire distinct artistic voices across generations.

At the heart of the exhibition is Joe Kolb, a celebrated figure in art education who taught for 32 impactful years at Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). Kolb is particularly known for his “A Line A Day” practice, a cornerstone of his teaching philosophy that encourages artists to commit to drawing just one line on a page weekly. This simple yet profound exercise emphasizes consistency, keen observation, and the enduring power of fundamental drawing. Visitors to “Lines, Legends, Limitless Talent” will observe how this concept subtly underpins the varied styles and approaches presented by all three artists.

Craig Markwardt, who first studied under Kolb at HSPVA, later joined him as a colleague there for 17 years. His contributions to the exhibition serve as a testament to the lasting impact of Kolb’s teaching philosophy, showcasing an evolution of artistic expression rooted in a shared foundational understanding.

The exhibition also features the poignant work of the late Lynn P. Kelly, who was a student of Kolb’s at HSPVA before becoming a colleague at the prestigious Glassell School of Art, MFA Houston. Kelly, who passed away in 2020, is honored with a selection of her art, offering a powerful tribute to her talent and the enduring connections forged through mentorship.

“The line is where it all begins – it’s the fundamental building block of visual language,” explains curator Joe Kolb. “This exhibition is a celebration of that simplicity, but also a look at how those foundational principles can branch out into limitless creative expressions through different hands and minds. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the artistic journey of my students, who became my colleagues, reflected in this show.”

Marian Marks, President of the Conroe Art League, added, “We are thrilled to host such a significant exhibition that not only showcases exceptional talent but also highlights the vital role of art education and mentorship in shaping our creative landscape. The historic Madeley Building provides a perfect backdrop for this intergenerational dialogue, connecting our community with Houston’s rich artistic legacy.”

The Conroe Art League, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts in Montgomery County, proudly hosts “Lines, Legends, Limitless Talent” in its gallery space within the historic Madeley Building.
