Alley Theatre Summer Chills: Mousetrap & Thriller Films

Houston's Alley Theatre launches "Summer Chills" series. Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" plays July 19-Aug 25.

HOUSTON — As summer temperatures climb in Houston, the Alley Theatre is turning down the thermostat with its highly anticipated "Summer Chills" series. This year, the downtown cultural institution is anchoring its seasonal programming with a high-profile staging of the world’s most famous murder mystery, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap.

The production, which takes the stage at the Alley’s Hubbard Theatre at 615 Texas Ave., begins its run with preview performances on July 19. The official opening night follows on July 26, with the production continuing through August 25.

Alley Theatre Artistic Director Rob Melrose is at the helm of the production. For Melrose, the play is a perfect fit for the Alley, which has long built a reputation for breathing new life into classic texts. The Mousetrap holds a singular place in theatrical history, having celebrated its 70th anniversary in London’s West End, where it holds the world record as the longest-running play in history.

The narrative centers on seven strangers trapped by a blizzard in the remote Monkswell Manor guesthouse. As the tension mounts and the body count rises, the guests realize that a killer is hiding among them. The play is renowned for its signature "whodunit" structure and a twist ending that, by tradition, audiences are sworn to keep secret.

Tickets for the stage production start at $25 and can be purchased online at alleytheatre.org or by calling the box office at 713-220-5700. The Alley encourages patrons to book early, noting that season ticket holders receive priority access and exclusive pricing benefits.

The "Summer Chills" series extends well beyond the main stage, leaning into the genre’s cinematic roots with a curated lineup of classic thrillers. Recognizing the Alley’s commitment to interdisciplinary arts, the theater will transform into a cinema house on Sunday evenings, screening four Hitchcockian masterpieces.

The film schedule includes: Rear Window – July 28 Psycho – August 4 Dial M for Murder – August 11 Strangers on a Train – August 18

Each screening begins at 7 p.m. and is paired with a "Summer Chills & Thrills" event. These post-screening sessions feature Artistic Director Rob Melrose and invited guest speakers who will lead deep-dive discussions into the craft, history, and suspenseful techniques employed by the directors of these iconic films.

For Houstonians looking for a break from the heat, the combination of a classic stage mystery and a series of high-stakes film screenings offers a comprehensive immersive experience into the world of suspense. More information on the full series and individual tickets for both the play and film events is available at the Alley Theatre’s official website.
