Bicycle-Car Crash Closes Hwy 242 Eastbound Near I-45 Tuesday

Bicycle-Car Crash Closes Hwy 242 Eastbound Near I-45 Tuesday

CONROE, Texas – A 38-year-old local man remains in critical condition Tuesday following a collision between a passenger vehicle and a bicycle on Highway 242. The incident, which triggered a major response from emergency services, snarled traffic in the heart of Conroe’s business corridor for much of the morning.

Conroe Police Department officials identified the cyclist as Mark Johnson of Conroe. Officers were dispatched to the scene just past the Interstate 45 overpass at approximately 10:30 a.m. following 911 calls reporting the accident.

Upon arrival, first responders from the Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD) provided emergency medical care to Johnson before transporting him to Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that as of Tuesday afternoon, Johnson remained in critical but stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle involved, identified as 27-year-old Sarah Davies of Spring, was operating a silver Honda Civic. Police stated that Davies was heading eastbound on Highway 242 when the collision occurred. She was uninjured and remained at the scene to assist investigators.

Traffic investigators are currently working to reconstruct the events leading up to the impact. Preliminary findings suggest that the Honda Civic may have been executing a lane change at the time of the collision, or that the driver failed to detect the cyclist until it was too late to avoid contact.

Highway 242 is a heavily trafficked arterial road, and local cycling advocates have long noted the challenges cyclists face when navigating the high-speed intersections near the I-45 junction. While bike lanes exist in portions of the city, infrastructure near the interstate interchange is often characterized by high-volume, high-speed traffic and complex merging zones.

The crash resulted in the closure of the eastbound lanes of Highway 242 for nearly two hours while police conducted a forensic analysis of the scene. Traffic was diverted onto frontage roads, leading to heavy congestion that stretched back to the Interstate 45 intersection. The roadway was fully reopened to motorists by 12:30 p.m.

Conroe Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Davis stated that no citations have been issued at this time, emphasizing that the investigation is in its early stages.

"We are currently reviewing evidence and speaking with potential witnesses to determine if any traffic violations occurred," Davis said.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage of the stretch of Highway 242 between 10:15 a.m. and 10:35 a.m. to contact the Conroe Police Department at 936-522-3200.

Updates regarding the condition of the victim and the outcome of the investigation will be provided as information becomes available. For real-time traffic updates in the Montgomery County area, residents are encouraged to monitor the official Conroe Police Department social media channels or the Texas Department of Transportation DriveTexas website at drivetexas.org.
