Conroe Community Clinic Adds Comprehensive Vision Care

Conroe Community Clinic Adds Comprehensive Vision Care

Conroe Community Clinic launched a full-scope vision program for uninsured Montgomery County residents.

CONROE – For the uninsured population of Montgomery County, the Conroe Community Clinic has long served as a vital safety net for primary medical needs. This week, that net grew significantly wider, as the clinic officially launched a full-scope vision program at its facility located at 1500 N. Frazier Street.

The expansion represents a major shift in operational capacity for the organization. While the clinic has provided basic vision screenings to low-income, uninsured adults since its inception in 2005, the new initiative upgrades those preliminary checks into comprehensive diagnostic eye care. Patients can now receive full exams, refraction services for prescription glasses, and critical screenings for sight-threatening conditions, including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Kim Stone, Executive Director of the Conroe Community Clinic, emphasized that the lack of affordable eye care often creates a silent public health crisis.

"Many of our patients have historically been forced to choose between groceries and an eye exam," Stone said. "When uninsured individuals delay eye care, they aren't just dealing with blurry vision; they are risking preventable blindness and the progression of chronic diseases that show symptoms in the eye, like diabetes. This expansion is about restoring quality of life and preventing long-term disability."

To lead the clinical side of the new program, the clinic has recruited optometrist Dr. Laura Smith-Olivares. Her expertise will be central to the clinic’s efforts to identify early-stage eye diseases that, if caught early, are often treatable.

The launch of the program is the result of a multi-year effort to secure both funding and clinical resources. The clinic, which underwent a major physical expansion in 2022 to accommodate its growing patient volume, relied on a coalition of local partners to bring the vision center to life.

Essential diagnostic equipment was provided through donations from The Woodlands Lions Club and The Woodlands Charities. Furthermore, the clinic successfully secured grant funding from a consortium of major regional healthcare providers and philanthropic organizations, including the Montgomery County United Way, Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, and CHI St. Luke's Health-The Woodlands Hospital.

"This really was a community-wide lift," Stone added. "It highlights how our local hospital systems and charitable organizations understand that a healthy Montgomery County requires addressing these specific, often overlooked gaps in care."

The Conroe Community Clinic operates on a mission to provide quality healthcare to those who fall through the cracks of the traditional insurance market. By integrating vision services, the clinic now offers a more holistic approach to health, acknowledging that sensory health is a key component of general physical wellness and employment readiness.

For those interested in scheduling an appointment, or for individuals looking to volunteer or donate to the clinic’s ongoing mission, information is available at the organization's official website at www.conroecommunityclinic.com. Officials encourage residents to check the website for updated clinic hours and eligibility requirements for the new vision services.
