Conroe Driver Asleep, Crashes on SH 105 Bridge

A 24-year-old Conroe man, Isai Uriel Rivera, crashed his car on SH 105 early Sunday, May 26, after falling asleep at the wheel.
CONROE, Texas — A 24-year-old Conroe man narrowly avoided a tragedy early Sunday morning after falling asleep behind the wheel and striking a concrete bridge barrier on State Highway 105.
The single-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on May 26. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Isai Uriel Rivera was traveling eastbound on SH 105 in a white 2014 Dodge Charger when he lost control of the vehicle near the Walden Road exit.
Trooper J. Fegan, who led the investigation at the scene, reported that the Charger veered off the roadway and collided with the concrete bridge rail that spans the West Fork of the San Jacinto River at Lake Conroe. The force of the impact left the sedan facing the opposite direction of travel, causing extensive damage to the front end of the vehicle.
While the car was totaled, Rivera escaped the wreckage with only minor injuries. Paramedics with the Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD) arrived shortly after the crash and transported him to HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe for evaluation and treatment.
DPS officials confirmed that Rivera was cooperative with investigators and attributed the cause of the crash to operator fatigue. The bridge itself also sustained cosmetic damage, with deep chips and scrapes visible along the concrete barrier where the vehicle made contact.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the hazards associated with drowsy driving, a major contributor to roadway fatalities in Texas. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drowsy driving impairs reaction time and decision-making capabilities in a manner similar to alcohol consumption.
Traffic safety experts recommend that drivers who feel signs of fatigue—such as frequent blinking, drifting between lanes, or difficulty remembering the last few miles driven—should pull over to a well-lit public area to rest or swap drivers.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation remains closed.
