Conroe ISD Board: Health Report & Legislative Plan

Conroe ISD Board: Health Report & Legislative Plan

CONROE, Texas – The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday, May 21, to address a variety of administrative, health-related, and long-term legislative planning items. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the CISD administration building, located at 320 W. Davis St. in Conroe.

A primary item on the agenda is the presentation and review of the 2023-24 annual health report. Compiled by the district’s School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), the report provides an assessment of the health and wellness programs currently serving the district’s student body. SHAC, which is composed of parents, community members, and school staff, plays a critical role in advising the board on issues such as physical education, health education, and mental health services provided within the district.

Beyond student wellness, the board will pivot toward future policy advocacy. While the 90th Texas Legislature concluded its primary business in May 2023, Conroe ISD officials are already preparing for the upcoming 91st legislative session, which is set to convene in Austin in January 2025.

Leading this initiative is the district’s Legislative Action Committee (LAC), a body comprised of board trustees, district leadership, and community stakeholders. The LAC meets monthly to identify and formulate legislative priorities that address the needs of Conroe ISD students and staff. Historically, the committee has been instrumental in influencing state education policy. Most notably, the group successfully advocated for the passage of House Bill 3928, which provided significant funding and structural improvements for dyslexia services across Texas public schools.

With the next session approaching, the committee is currently reviewing potential areas for advocacy, including school safety, teacher retention, and state-level funding formulas that impact growing districts like Conroe ISD.

Members of the public who wish to review the specific items to be discussed can access the official meeting agenda on the Conroe ISD website beginning May 17. The district encourages community participation and provides full transparency for those who cannot attend in person. The meeting will be broadcast live via the Conroe ISD YouTube channel.

Further information regarding board policies, meeting archives, and the Legislative Action Committee can be found on the district’s portal at www.conroeisd.net.
