Conroe-Montgomery Road Projects Status

Conroe-Montgomery Road Projects Status

CONROE — Residents navigating the busy corridors of Conroe and Montgomery are seeing tangible evidence of a long-term strategy to combat the region's rapid growth. As the population in Montgomery County continues to surge, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is executing a series of multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects aimed at alleviating chronic traffic congestion and improving safety for local commuters.

The centerpiece of this regional overhaul remains the widening of Interstate 45, which serves as the primary artery for thousands of daily travelers. Construction crews are currently working on the segment stretching from SH 242 north to League Line Road. This massive undertaking, budgeted at approximately $487.6 million, is designed to expand the corridor to eight mainlanes. Officials expect this segment to reach completion by late 2028.

Looking further north, the department is preparing for the next phase of the I-45 expansion. Design work for the section between League Line Road and FM 1374 is scheduled to wrap up in mid-2024. If the timeline holds, construction will break ground in mid-2025, with an estimated completion date in 2029. That project carries a price tag of $389.3 million. Earlier this spring, motorists saw some immediate relief with the completion of the northbound frontage road from League Line Road to FM 1374, a $20.9 million upgrade that opened to traffic in April 2024.

Beyond the interstate, secondary highways are undergoing their own transformations. State Highway 242 is in the midst of a significant, multi-year improvement plan. Work on the western portion, connecting I-45 to FM 1488, began in February 2023. According to recent TxDOT project status reports, the $108.8 million project is roughly 30 percent complete as of April 2024 and is on track for an early 2028 finish. Simultaneously, the eastern portion, extending from FM 1488 to US 59, is moving toward the bidding phase. Design work for that $144.9 million segment neared completion this April, with officials eyeing a 2025 start date for construction.

FM 1488, a corridor frequently cited by residents as a bottleneck, is also seeing focused attention. The segment from I-45 to Mostyn Drive has finished its design phase, with construction slated to commence in 2025. Moving further west, the expansion from Mostyn Drive to FM 2978—a $45 million project—has been active since April 2023. Progress has been gradual, with the project standing at about 10 percent completion as of April 2024. The target completion for that stretch is set for mid-2027.

While many projects remain in the heavy construction phase, motorists are already enjoying the benefits of several recently completed improvements on Highway 105. Both major segments of the 105 widening are now open to the public. The stretch from Loop 336 West to FM 2854, which cost $16.1 million and included new traffic signals and road widening, was opened in January 2024. Following that, the eastern segment from Loop 336 East to FM 1485 concluded in March 2024 at a cost of approximately $28.3 million.

Local planners note that these projects are essential to managing the density of Montgomery County, which has consistently ranked among the fastest-growing counties in the nation. The ongoing construction is part of a collaborative effort between the Houston-Galveston Area Council and TxDOT to enhance regional connectivity.

Residents can track the status of these projects and view live traffic cameras by visiting the TxDOT Drive Texas website at drivetexas.org or by checking the Houston District project portal. Officials advise motorists to remain cautious in construction zones, where speed limits are often reduced and traffic patterns change frequently as crews work to finish these critical infrastructure upgrades.
