Conroe Montgomery Roadwork: 9 Project Updates

CONROE – The landscape of Montgomery County is undergoing a rapid transformation as local and state officials push forward with a suite of infrastructure projects designed to untangle decades of traffic congestion. With nine major construction efforts currently active or in the final design phase, residents are seeing the physical manifestation of a multi-million dollar strategy to keep pace with one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States.

Data provided by the Conroe-Montgomery County Area Transportation Study (CAMPO) and the City of Conroe outlines a roadmap that aims to shift the area from a collection of bottlenecked two-lane corridors to a modernized, multi-lane network capable of handling increased residential and commercial traffic.

The most visible work remains along the FM 1488 corridor, a critical artery connecting the growing suburban communities of Magnolia and Conroe. The widening of FM 1488 from two to four lanes, stretching from FM 1774 to the Waller County line, represents a total investment exceeding $32 million. The first segment, managed by Webber LLC, is nearing the finish line with a scheduled completion of Summer 2024. A second phase, handled by James Construction Group LLC, is expected to follow in Summer 2025.

Local officials note that the current construction boom is a direct response to the unprecedented population surge in Conroe and Montgomery. As the city continues to annex land and recruit new businesses, the need for enhanced connectivity has become an economic imperative. The projects, while disruptive, are viewed as essential to maintaining the area's quality of life and ensuring that emergency services, commuters, and freight haulers can navigate the county efficiently.

At the intersection of FM 1488 and FM 2978, a $7.5 million safety and capacity project led by NBG Constructors, Inc. is currently 80% complete. Once finished this summer, the addition of dedicated turn lanes is expected to significantly reduce wait times at what has historically been one of the county's most congested crossroads.

Infrastructure planners are also focusing on the long-term expansion of SH 105 and SH 242. Both roads are undergoing major widenings from four to six lanes, including modern safety additions such as continuous left-turn lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure like sidewalks and shared-use paths. These projects are larger in scale and longer in duration, with completions not anticipated until Summer 2027.

In addition to state-led efforts, municipal projects are moving to improve local access. The extension of Sgt. Ed Holcomb Blvd. from FM 2854 to Airport Road is currently 15% complete and is slated for completion in Spring 2025. This project serves as a key piece of the city's plan to provide alternatives to the often-crowded I-45 frontage roads.

Other key municipal projects currently in various stages of development include the expansion of League Line Road from I-45 to McCaleb Road, which is expected to wrap up by Fall 2025. Furthermore, the city is preparing for a Summer 2024 groundbreaking on the Foster Drive widening project, and a Winter 2025 start for the widening of the McCaleb Road bridge over Lake Creek.

While the presence of heavy equipment and orange barrels is set to continue for several years, city officials emphasize that the coordination between contractors is being closely monitored to minimize impact on daily traffic. Drivers are encouraged to stay updated on project timelines and lane closures by monitoring the official City of Conroe engineering department portal or the TxDOT Drive Texas website for real-time traffic alerts.

As these projects reach completion, the hope is that Montgomery County’s transportation grid will finally be capable of supporting its status as a premier destination for families and businesses in the greater Houston area. With over $175 million currently tied up in these nine projects alone, the region is betting heavily on infrastructure as the foundation for its future growth.
